...Okay, so Atlantis may not quite be paradise to Helga, since Kida sentenced her to remain there for centuries doing public service unless under special supervision. But there is a sense of quiet awe I tried for, though.
But this was cover art for a CD I made for Chrstmas. The figure was a sketch I digitally outlined, colored, and shaded in Photoshoppe, and the background a digitally altered photograph (in Photoshoppe) taken at Disney's Animal Kingdom. I added some shadows, posterized, removed a branch, and made the edges blue, among other things.
The costume is Gob's design, taken from her drawings and description in the RPG.

The background as well as the character Helga Sinclair from Atlantis: the Lost Empire, is property of Disney (1999 and 2001 respectively, I do believe.)

I totally love this peice. Love her expression, though you can never really read Helga... but I think that's why everyone loves her so much. I don't think she's at all black and white. She's super gray. I think that works with your idea of public service mixed with, as you put it, "quiet awe." Great emotion from this.

The first Atlantis was DEFINATELY amazing. I look at the second not as a sequel, but what it was originally intended to be: three episodes of the scrapped TV series, Team Atlantis. Makes it more enjoyable that way.

The spiral designs were, I believe, supposed to be a cross between tribal and crop circle designs. How 'bout them apples!

Very very pretty. I love how the shadowing on her really ties her in with the background. Nicely done. And I wouldn't say she looks terribly pleased about being there.

Well, the leaf shadows are a brush, actually, placed originally on a seperate layer then merged, and... Well, you get the picture.
The only filters used on her were posterize (on a transparent layer) and I know I played with the color filters.

very cool. i love the shade of green used here. it's beautiful, and it blends well with the forest bg, and i always loved the crystal hanging as a token around the traditional atlantian neck....
