Work from my Bachelor of Fine Art thesis show___________________________
This is one of my favorite pieces, just because I really had a vision and passion to complete it. Here I spelled out "Humor" in Binary code using ceramic toilet paper. I threw the toilet paper on the wheel as a closed off double cylinder. It took a while, and I don't think I would have finished it if it wasn't so close to my heart. It's not the best image, it's much better seen in person.

___________________________
In this line of work, using everyday objects as text, I wrote out concepts which I have struggled to grasp in binary code. I chose binary code because of its simple yet complex characteristics. In binary code, you either have a “1” or a “0”. It’s simply one or the other. However, when put together in a sequence they can represent characters which form words used for communication. Everything input into a computer has to be filtered through binary code. I compared this to the way people think. Everything I feel is brought into me through a language that I understand. The objects I choose may or may not make sense to everyone because it is the mental connection I make when I relate difficult concepts to my tangible, physical world. The viewer may be able to draw the same connections I do, or to their own ideas. These pieces also work as hieroglyphs in that sense, giving this body of work a bilingual quality that I enjoy.

The series of work is interesting. The question I have is that when you are able to use the daily objects, why remake it in ceramics?

Nicely done. As a coder and a photographer, I appreciated the art AND the technology. The MSB position threw me for a bit as well, (sorry for the pun) but I worked through it. Had to laugh at some of the comments about the bit lengths. Not all systems are 8 bit or multiples of 8 bit. As a matter of fact, before anyone else bashes him for 7 bits, go read the history of ASCII... [link] Thanks for sharing your work!

I'm glad you like it! Thanks for backing up my 7-bit choice.

Now I know what binary means, now I'm one of the people who know binary! yay!
so that's why you chose to have it 7 rows! the first row was full of 0's
awesome work by the way

I am really bothered by the fact that you chose rows of size 7 instead of size 8. It makes me so uncomfortable to look at.

If you're being serious, I chose it because ASCII codes uses 7 bits...

Obviously you didn't read that this actually spells out a word in binary -meaning the artist had no choice in how long each row was...

Um, a char in binary is one byte which is 8 bits.
So yeah, he definitely did have a choice; he just cut off the leading zeros.

ASCII is a 7-bit encoding, so the choice was obvious.
People confuse binary for a lot of things.. Binary just means consisting of only 1 and 0. Anything more that that is just different uses for binary. Most laymen confuse binary with ASCII, so you hear things like "written in binary". Others confuse binary with the bits/bytes structure and think you can only have binary digits in groups of 8. But binary encoding existed long before ASCII or computers.

I know what binary is; I have a compsci degree and I've taken enough math courses to know about Bases. I was just bothered by the fact that he's making a modern piece that uses an outdated form of ASCII; I don't know of any modern machines that use 7 bits instead of 8 bits to represent a character. It's a strong personal preference for me to see a byte instead of 7 bits, especially after the amount of bit manipulation problems I've done.
Thanks for the know it all attitude though.

nice one, in spite of the fact that each binary character must be divisible by 8, which bugged me, but nice work anyway...

You have a msb on the right and no leading null, that can be confusing for people. But otherwise - nice touch, I've seen a lot of jokes around binary, but thats pure original.

Actually now that I revisit this I have a ceramic question. It says that you threw the toilet paper roll, but did you make each one on the wheel or make the first one and then make a mold from it for slip casting. I'm lazy and not so good at keeping clay with the right amount of moisture to work with so I like to make slip casts, also saves a lot of clay These seem more like you made each one but they are so perfect @.@ I liked ceramics, the clay didn't like me though. Glad you graduated with a BFA
I'm still trying to decide between a BA or BFA in painting.

I made each one on the wheel; Great question by the way. I worked with these pretty quickly after throwing them, and there wasn't much I had to do to them besides put the pattern in.
In my opinion, you should get your BFA in painting. A BFA says more to the art community than a BA because it is a specialized degree just for artists, and it usually means you have to take more art classes to graduate, which doesn't hurt anything. Also, if you want any jobs or opportunities within painting, many places require a BFA, such as art centers, residencies, and MFA programs.

Thanks for answering, and the advice. Most people I ask never have an answer for me about the BA vs. BFA, but they're usually in the same boat as me. It's nice to get advice from someone who has graduated.
