Description Work from my Bachelor of Fine Art thesis show

This is one of my favorite pieces, just because I really had a vision and passion to complete it. Here I spelled out "Humor" in Binary code using ceramic toilet paper. I threw the toilet paper on the wheel as a closed off double cylinder. It took a while, and I don't think I would have finished it if it wasn't so close to my heart. It's not the best image, it's much better seen in person.

In this line of work, using everyday objects as text, I wrote out concepts which I have struggled to grasp in binary code. I chose binary code because of its simple yet complex characteristics. In binary code, you either have a “1” or a “0”. It’s simply one or the other. However, when put together in a sequence they can represent characters which form words used for communication. Everything input into a computer has to be filtered through binary code. I compared this to the way people think. Everything I feel is brought into me through a language that I understand. The objects I choose may or may not make sense to everyone because it is the mental connection I make when I relate difficult concepts to my tangible, physical world. The viewer may be able to draw the same connections I do, or to their own ideas. These pieces also work as hieroglyphs in that sense, giving this body of work a bilingual quality that I enjoy.

Nice work! It made me think. I love the play between high brow/low brow humor. It's surprisingly sophisticated.

I love this photo but I should really sneak in to my mother's walk in closet and take a photo of her mess. She has a collection that makes this look tiny. The woman detests clutter or anything "extra" -- like, if she has two spoons she'll throw one away cause she only needs one, right? But she has a frightening obsession with toilet paper. Thin, scratchy, cheap toilet paper. I told her one time I was gonna have to bring my Cottonelle when I visit. I said, "Your crotch must be made of the same thing as your heart, cast iron," and I said some other stuff that's unimportant.

"Threw... on the wheel as a closed off double cylinder". I don't at all understand how that would be done. Or the texture! How do you make something so delicate so regular?

These are ceramic?! Wow!

I love how much thought and care was put into something as apparently everyday as toilet paper, and the binary. Wonderful. Simply wonderful.

Why do you not think of this as art?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

josh030 In reply to rebootmaster2001 [2009-10-08 03:11:21 +0000 UTC]

cause its just rolls of toilet paper placed in an order to spell one word in bianary code.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rebootmaster2001 In reply to josh030 [2009-10-10 00:23:23 +0000 UTC]

I made each roll of toilet paper out of clay. This is one of many pieces where I used clay to make realistic objects used as a 1 or 0 to spell out a word which is related to the objects. Did you even read my description?

kiwidoc [2009-10-01 16:00:55 +0000 UTC]

a brilliant concept, and very well executed. For me, the detail in your work is what makes this sculpture work so very well. You've even managed to make the rolls look as though they are soft and squashable - I have no idea if thats a real word but you know what I mean

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rebootmaster2001 In reply to kiwidoc [2009-10-02 18:05:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. This high detail style is somewhat looked down upon in the ceramics world because usually there is no meaning behind that work. I cannot help but pack as much detail into my work as I can, and having an idea behind my art is very important. Since this is the case I try to make the concept need a high detailed, realistic surface in order to convey my message more appropriately.

And I like the word squashable.

I love the detail. To me there has always been a glorioasly silly paradox in the idea of making toilet paper all frilly and lacy and pretty The intricate designs on your loo rolls just highlight the humour
