Description Work from my Bachelor of Fine Art thesis show

___________________________

This is one of my favorite pieces, just because I really had a vision and passion to complete it. Here I spelled out "Humor" in Binary code using ceramic toilet paper. I threw the toilet paper on the wheel as a closed off double cylinder. It took a while, and I don't think I would have finished it if it wasn't so close to my heart. It's not the best image, it's much better seen in person.

In this line of work, using everyday objects as text, I wrote out concepts which I have struggled to grasp in binary code. I chose binary code because of its simple yet complex characteristics. In binary code, you either have a “1” or a “0”. It’s simply one or the other. However, when put together in a sequence they can represent characters which form words used for communication. Everything input into a computer has to be filtered through binary code. I compared this to the way people think. Everything I feel is brought into me through a language that I understand. The objects I choose may or may not make sense to everyone because it is the mental connection I make when I relate difficult concepts to my tangible, physical world. The viewer may be able to draw the same connections I do, or to their own ideas. These pieces also work as hieroglyphs in that sense, giving this body of work a bilingual quality that I enjoy.

Conceptualist shite. This to me represents everything that is wrong with the art world today. Anyonew who calls this art wouldn't be beyond cutting up a Raphael to wipe their arse on.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I didn't have internet access from June to August.

Well, I'm sorry that you don't like my art piece. Personally, I do not comment on things I do not like, especially in such a rude and crass way.

To each their own.

Presumably you were hoping to provoke a response. I'm sorry for the vitriol, but this brought back all the post-Duchamp modernist nonsense and propaganda that I was force-fed at uni. I've since been confirmed in my opinion that it's a scam and a scandal that such things are promoted as 'fine art'. I don't object to its existence as a mediocre visual joke, the offence arises from the fact that this sort of thing has widely supplanted true fine art, involving real skill and expressing finer feelings and philosophy. You could probably win the Turner prize with it. Turner, if alive and painting today, could not even get selected.

Well, I find it sad that you choose to have such a small scope for what fine art is. However, as someone who is willing to accept nearly anything that makes sense conceptually as art, I must also accept that other people may not, and that is okay. I have no hard feelings.

Who are you to define what is and isn't art?

Its one thing to not like a piece. Its another to just outright bash it. Have some respect for the artist and the time and effort that they put into their creations. I would like to see you sculpt a picture perfect roll of toilet paper.

You represent everything that is wrong in the art world today. This is conceptual yes, but still something that a lot of time and effort and passion went into. It's art whether you like it or not. I'm far beyond cutting up a Raphael and wiping my ass with it...and I don't personally like this piece very much...but it's still art and it is still brilliant, personal tastes aside. So you're wrong on both counts.

There is even an explanation of the meaning and intent behind this piece...an explanation that helps make it art. You're one of those elitist artists who thinks that art has a strict definition and who thinks that children drawing on lined paper with crayons aren't artists until they're adults painting on canvas with oil. People with your attitude about art are disgusting, and certainly not true artists in the actual definition of the word...which you clearly fail to understand.

Thank you for backing me up. Everybody has their own taste, and I applaud them for that. However, there is something to say about people who try to push their opinions on others in a rude and aggressive way. Whatever... I posted this on the internet so I'm always expecting this.

In a way though, he's right... I'm not a fan of Raphael LOL!

Not being a fan doesn't mean you would wipe your patooty with it though!

And you're welcome, I believe in intelligence and creativity and I believe even more in those things being a very important aspect of art itself...I am more than willing to defend art that is clearly wonderful when it is being bashed by people who try to put art into such a narrow category. Your piece is wonderful and interesting and thought provoking...and humorous. I'm glad you feel the way you do in general, believing in the ideal of "To each their own"...I respect that immensely.

Hear hear!

Myself, I am far from being even a liker of conceptual art, to the point where I'm bitter over Duchamp's role in it, yet I can still begrudge him respect for his ideas, which were still thought-provoking.
And this toilet paper piece I found to be quite clever. Just as you say, time and effort went into the construction, not just the conceptualisation. It wasn't vague; it was discussed by the artist; and moreover, unlike many conceptual works, the artist hasn't used ready-mades. They made the rolls themselves.

I can't abide most that falls under the mantle of contemporary, but I don't need to be precious about it. A real artist should have the ability to see merit in things even averse to their tastes.
