Hey guys!Havnt had a chance to post something new in a little while. Mainly cause I have been busy with work-art, which unfortunately dosn't usually get seen for quite some time. I will see about posting some of that stuff in the future.
Anyway, for now, I wanted to show this rough breakdown sketch, as well as some of the 'studies' I have been doing. Not sure if many have noticed, but I had put a little sign on the bottom of my journal entry saying that if you caught the 30,000 page views on my front page, and copy n pasted the info, I would take a request drawing. Well, lucky THORCUS grabbed that, and requested a couple of streetfighter characters. The one which popped out to me was RYU. I have always had trouble drawing RYU, so I did a couple of different versions to try and get him right.
For the final piece I plan to do full finished inks. I will be fixing up a lot of the mistakes you can see in this sketch. Particularly the leg region which I feel is a little crappy and undynamic right now. It will be interesting to see how it turns out anyway. My inking is pretty rusty these days.
Anyway....now's the time to go hardcore on the critiques. If there is anything extra crap, now's the time to say it, or forever hold your piece! haha

Hmm, Def liking the middle 1. Very dynamic and nice expression. But the 3 facestudies on the bottom left don't really look like ryu. He looks old and ugly. I like his facial structure in the middle pic a lot more. You know, with the shorter nose and shorter jawline etc. The study on the bottom right looks nice tho. But also makes him look a bit old.

yeah. I pretty much agree with you on the face structures. I think I needed to draw the ugly n old ones first before I realised what I was doing wrong ! lol.

Well, I will probably do others in the future if I get the chance. I actually have a Dhalsim somewhere that i never scanned, but came out cool. This one I did as a request though, because the requester completed a little hidden task I have on my journal entry.

I always found Ryu hard to draw too! something about him just being a normal, Neutral sort of guy.
I love the middle sketch, really dynamic and totally rad.
the bottom ones are a bit ape-like and ugly, cool but not at all Ryu.
As for crits...I dunno, maybe a bit more japanese? bah whatever, i like the middle pic as is

heh.... Now that you mention it, that is kinda funny how he totally talks hard american in the flick. I rekon they should redub all of Ryu's lines and use monkey magics voice over! That would be tops! hahaha

Very very cool man. I cannot get enough of capcom art which is why i miss MAD so much. Anyway i like the 2 bottom right, but not the 2 bottom left. Everything else looks great.*S* Keep it up!

Um..... I guess all I can really say here is that I really want to do my version of Ryu, rather than going for the tried n true capcom version. Sometimes its fun to put your own spin on a classic character, although, i must admit, the thick eyebrows are pretty much a RYU trait if you ask me

I think Tadzero is right about the pretty boy thing, Ryu is kinda like one of the Anime girls like Sailor Moon, where his style of Guy is like some Abercrombie icon of hot stuff to girls, kinda like Superman. But he's humble about it and can kick ass too, so he's some sort of balance between the two.
Anyway, I really like your sketches. I can tell you have fun with these. ^^ I like his thrid face, the one with his mouth open. It kinda reminds me of that really great echoing "EUAH Euah euah..." sound they make when a male Character in Street Fighter 2 loses.
His legs do make him look like he's standing still kind of, so yeah a little twist in one of them (probably his left one), and maybe having one of his knee's bent a lot more dynamicaly, would make him seem to move a lot more.
But really, wow, I love how this looks right now. Most excellent job with this one!

Thanks Dragon. As I replied to Tadzero, I never really saw Ryu as much of a pretty-boy, rather than an emotionless warrior. It kinda makes me realise that the reason I have had most trouble drawing Ryu in the past is probably because I tend to try an put a lot of emotion into my characters. Interesting point, anyway.
I laughed as I read your "euah,euah, euah" SFX interpretation! haha... Nice one. I know the exact sound you mean.
Good points on the legs too. Thats pretty much what I have in mind for them. In fact, I'm probably gonna re-draw his whole bottom half 8)

Oh, yeah no doubt about it, Ryu has the screaming war face when he does his hoduken thing and that's kinda what this looks like to me (except without the hoduken, which I guess is what's throwing it off for me). So your Ryu has a good amount of emotion, it's just not something I'd expect from Ryu most of the time. Again that's just my interpretation anyway. I still really like your Ryu in this one though, especially with that giant mouth of his.

There are very few artists whose sketches I can stand to really look at, but yours are always so fascinating to me. They're just as pleasing to my eye as fully finished digital drawings.
Crits? It's so hard to crit your work, since everything looks so perfect to me. I do kind of agree that the legs look a little undynamic, but they're far from crappish.

One thing i would say, is not to make him look so rugged. He needs to look like a prety boy, who is built to kick some ones ass. He's not scary looking, his character is someone who ou look at and think that the fight is going to end quick, but he comes out taking names. That is all i have to say.

Hmmmmmm.... Very interesting point there. I never saw the pretty-boy side of Ryu, but I do know what you mean. He is quite emotionless even when fighting. I guess this could be a moment when the dark Hadou is starting to take effect??? heh.

That is how i always saw Ryu, strong but very collected and not rugged looking. His nature is gentle so he should appear that way. But no matter, thanks for considering it.

perception or fact? in this case i can certainly see where youre coming from, but at the same time there also is a lot to be said about the way you may be interpreting the character based on the art you have seen to date, and the way J is choosing to pursue the subject. and theres certainly nothing wrong with that, from either point of view. just try to remember, without artistic liberty, every single picture of every single character under the sun would be cookie cutter replicas of one another. where would the fun in that be?
sometimes you have to try to appreciate art for what it is in and of itself, not for what you may percieve it "should" look like...
just some things to mull over i guess, eh? sorry to chime in.

well i wasn't hoping to have a art debate but here it is. When you draw characters in a style you have to capture a trait of a character, even if it is in a different style. The style changes doesn't mean the character changes. Alot of artist draw him that way, because that is how he is illustrated. I don't think you have full right change a character because you have a style. Youre style has to compliment that character. That is my idea any way

hey man its all good. its your idea and youre more than entitled to it. at the same time its good to sometimes step out of the box and look at things from a different point of view. it doesnt neccesarily mean you have to change the way you think, but you can learn a lot from trying to view things from different perspectives.
for the record tho... J did capture traits of the character!
