Description

In the city of Orlando, FL, police were investigating a disturbance at a business office, where the residents had recently been in the process of moving their operations to another location. In the night, several officers and their patrol cars convened and found all of the men inside crucially wounded in what seemed to be a heated fire fight, with statements such as “RAPISTS” and “SKIN TRADERS” graffitied onto the walls afterwards. Arsenal, a member of the superhero team known as The Titans, arrived onto the scene and convened with the detectives. They found wounds on the still-alive victims very similar to puncture wounds from a bow and arrow. While looking into the building further, they found no evidence of the graffitis’ accusation of these men being sex traffickers… until Arsenal pulled up a schematic of the building and found a large room on the map not present in the actual building. He found a walled-off room and, when they knocked down the wall, they found several women of various ages, nude, malnourished, and sick, trapped inside. The police and paramedics got the victimized women to the nearest hospital.

Arsenal met with other members of The Titans, Wonder Girl, Starfire, and Jericho, and told them about the situation. They decided to launch an investigation into the sex trafficking ring to shut them down and find whoever had been waging their own war against them. The Titans went to the hospital where the women had been taken to, along with the attacked traffickers. Jericho and Arsenal talked to one of the traffickers and he denied everything. Using his powers of possession, Jericho entered the man’s mind and revealed that it’s true and they were relocating to another city in Florida. This forced admission would not be admissible in court, but they decided to use the info to find whoever attacked the traffickers before the vigilante ended up killing someone. With Wonder Girl and Starfire, they talked the women and deduced how the ring operates in kidnapping them.

In the next city the sex trafficking ring, which they learned is called “The Kingdom”, was moving to, Donna Sandsmark (Wonder Girl’s civilian identity) disguised herself as a teenaged runaway to lure one of their number to her. When one of the Kingdom thugs approached her, Arsenal, Starfire, and Jericho saw a young woman in a costume appear from the shadows of an alley and attacked him with archery skills. Revealing herself as Wonder Girl, Donna fought to prevent the girl from killing the goon. The other Titans closed in on her and subdued the young vigilante, capturing her and the Kingdom employee. In their temporary base, in an abandoned building, the Titans locked the Kingdom thug away in another room while they interrogated the vigilante.

Her name is Mia Dearden, also known by her nickname “Speedy”. Living in North Florida, on the coast, most of her life, Mia was an athletic prodigy who was on her high school’s archery team. When she discovered The Kingdom, the secret side business of her stepfather, John King, he forced her into becoming a prostitute to keep her silent. In the end, she escaped, but she had contracted HIV from one of her many rapists. All that was a year ago.

Mia’s story spoke to the Titans and they agreed to help her take down her stepfather and his criminal empire. Suddenly, they heard screams from the room where they were holding the Kingdom thug, and when they got there, he was dead, his brain ripped out of the back of his skull. The team and Speedy follow forensic trails leading from the glove box of the Titans’ T-Car, to the room where the thug was being held, to outside the abandoned building where they were. They followed the forensics trail to another building in the city, a night club, an they attacked it, safely evacuating the civilian party-goers while fighting the Kingdom goons inside. In the inner sanctum, Speedy confronted her stepfather and demanded his surrender. John King pulled out a gun on her, and Speedy drew her bowstring, as Arsenal arrived to talk down the situation. Speedy loosed her arrow… and it struck something behind King! Dropping his gun, King ran for his life as the creature (some kind of brain in a cybernetic casing with tentacles wearing a coat and a tiny hat) attacked Speedy and Arsenal. The cybernetic creature, calling itself Ragdoll, says that he’s here for “subjects” that the Kingdom recently acquired for his master, and if they can’t give him the girls, he’ll take King’s and his cronies’ disembodied brains instead. Arsenal and Speedy fought Ragdoll as the other Titans went head-to-head with King’s men (even Starfire having trouble with a chain-gun-toting thug). With precise shooting, Speedy managed to pin all of Ragdoll’s tentacle-like arms to the wall, saving Arsenal from a forced lobotomy. The other Titans, after apprehending King, entered the room to meet with Arsenal and Speedy, but Ragdoll’s brain-casing ejected from the rest of the body and rolled off to who-knows-where.

In the end, John King and his men are arrested, the women trapped in the night club’s basement are rescued, and Mia agrees to testify against the Kingdom in court. Arsenal consults with the other Titans members, via communicator, and they agree to give Speedy a shot at becoming a Titan herself.

Meanwhile, the Ragdoll escapes from the city back into the awaiting claws of his master, The Scarecrow

Notes:

* Speedy, much like heroic archers Arsenal and Green Arrow before her, knows to pull her arrows out of where they land to reuse them.

* The Ragdoll is Peter Merkel, a serial killer who had been executed on death row. Scarecrow, a mad scientist who escaped prison, revived Merkel’s body-less brain and transformed him into the cybernetic Ragdoll to hunt people for Scarecrow, whom he can experiment on.

** Ragdoll can hide in most any-size space, and he ambushes his victims from them.

** His tentacles can change into various bladed weapons, such as a hook.
