We return to Sunnyvale, California, the hometown of 14-year-old Benjamin Tennyson, secretly known as the superhero Ben 10. And Ben is tired. For the past few months, he has not been getting restful sleep and he is irritable and sluggish. This has not stopped him from excelling in school and trying to be a hero, but this has put a damper on his social life. His parents knew of his second life as a hero, and supported him wherever they could, and the same for Ben’s girlfriend Julie Yamamoto. For some time now, random adults have been disappearing from the city, and Ben had been keeping his eyes out for anything unusual. However, that unusualness came out of nowhere when a bizarre travelling circus came to Sunnyvale! The circus set up shop in the middle of central park, with trained animals, various performers, and… clowns. “Why did it have to be clowns?” Ben thought when he first saw this circus come to town. As fliers were being passed out by the circus employees, some people came to the office of the mayor to ask if she approved of the circus being set up in the park. The mayor affirmed that she gave the travelling circus’ owner the go-ahead to do so. Within a few days, the circus was ready to show what it has! All along the grounds of the surrounding big top were games, food, and entertainment. Such entertainment included a professional hypnotist named Sublimino the Influential, and trio of “circus freaks”: Thumbskull, a muscular man with an actual fingernail-like growth protruding out of his bald head, Acidbreath, a pale man with an acidic breath that melted his natural teeth long ago, and Frightwig, a woman with long, thick red hair that she can manipulate like tentacles. As the barker led the audience inside during the first performance of the day, Ben bought a ticket and followed them in, thinking the kidnapped people may have something to do with this circus… Inside the tent we see the owner of the circus, a portly man dressed as a clown, announce himself to the audience. He is Zombozo the Clown, the loud and boisterous ringleader of this travelling circus! While the show was going on, Ben decided to get past the raucously laughing crowd, entertained by Zombozo’s clowns, to sneak backstage. With no one looking, Ben activated the Omnitrix, a technologically advanced band fused to his arm, and transformed into Grey Matter, one of his 10 metahuman forms that was tiny, but highly intelligent. He looked in the back areas of the big top, only to discover a large device that was on and working. Using Grey Matter’s intelligence, Ben discovered that it was an ambient delta wave generator that was afflicting the whole crowd of people, mentally manipulating them! Ben also found some devices that looked wearable; possibly the performers out there were wearing them to become immune to the delta waves. Ben didn’t question why he was seemingly immune, as he had just discovered a few cages with the missing people inside them. However, Acidbreath, one of the “freak show” members, had discovered the “weird alien-looking thing” that was attempting to free the captives. Ben had to avoid the mutant’s attacks as Grey Matter, and this only got worse as the other two freaks, Thumbskull and Frightwig, came into the area to aid Acidbreath. Eventually, Grey Matter escaped their sight and changed back into Ben to blend in with the crowd exiting the big top, as the performance had just let up. A few hours later, in the dead of night, Ben pulled up on his bike to central park to sneak back into the circus to free the captives. Seeing the performers and employees packing up to move onto the next city, Ben changed into XLR8, a super-fast form, to attack the trio of freaks he encountered before. He bested them and the other aggressive employees of the circus and ran into the empty big top. The captives, now emaciated and listless, were moved to the center ring of the circus, but that was a trap that snared Ben, who changed back from XLR8, with tentacles that spontaneously emerged from the delta wave device. Zombozo, flanked by his lackey Sublimino and who called the device the “Psyclown”, came forth to see what he had caught. Ben demanded to know what he did to everyone. Zombozo explained that he used to be a scientist, and he was caught in an accident that altered his genetics. Now he needs to drain the positive psychic energy of others to restore himself periodically, regardless of what happens to his victims. He and his partner in crime Sublimino built the Psyclown to do so, and the missing victims were people who got too close to their machinations. One of them was the mayor’s aide, who saw the mayor being brainwashed by Sublimino into allowing the circus to set up shop in the park. Done with Ben’s meddling, Zombozo had Sublimino turn his “hyper delta wave emitter” on Ben. Ben was exposed to the hypnotic rays of the handheld weapon… but was unaffected. Zombozo and Sublimino were baffled, so baffled that they didn’t see ben reach towards the Omnitrix and change into Diamondhead, a tall and muscular form made of living crystals. Diamondhead tore through the tentacles of the Psyclown and ripped it apart with his powers. The surge of energy from the destroyed device collapsed the tent, but Ben and the circus’ hostages were okay. Zombozo seemingly was turned to dust from his power supply being cut off, and soon enough Sublimino was arrested, and the other circus employees were freed from his mind control. However, the three circus freaks escaped. Ben vanished into the night before the police arrived, and he got home by nightfall... But instead of getting to sleep… he got on his computer…
