Description

In the city of Pittsburgh, PA, we meet Dr. Joan Leland, a psychiatric physician treating Cassandra Kane, the youngest daughter of businessman William Kane. As William was busy attending the reveal of the Sigma device (which would be hijacked by a new supervillain called Monarch and then saved by the hero team Infinity Inc.), Dr. Leland was talking to Cassie’s older sister Kate Kane this day. Dr. Leland recognized Cassie’s autism and PTSD diagnoses, her trouble speaking any language, and her rocky past involving being abandoned by her biological parents, sexual abuse, and being tricked into working for a super-criminal (the late Thomas Wayne Jr. aka Hush aka Owlman). The doctor expressed her concerns for Cassie, as she has been violent towards her high school classmates as of recently and her grades are beginning to slip. There is a distinct possibility that Cassie had not been taking her medication… Meanwhile, at Kane International (which William Kane was the former CEO of, now run by his nephew Bruce Wayne), Dr. Victor Schivel was continuing his research into MacGregor’s Syndrome, an incurable neurological disease. His laboratory at K.I. holds a cryogenics capsule that contains his preserved wife Nora Schivel, who contracted MacGregor’s a year and a half ago and Victor dove deep into trying to cure it. Soon enough, his supervisor Ferris Boyle demanded, on behalf of Mr. Wayne himself, that Victor shut down his research and turn over his remaining funds. Tearfully, Victor had no other recourse but to comply; Nora, in her cryo-pod, was soon shipped to Elliot Memorial Hospital to be unfrozen. That night, as Victor sorrowfully made the trek back to his car, two thugs overpowered him and threw him into their van. The van took Victor to an abandoned warehouse. Victor was astonished to find a new research facility cobbled from it, including his wife in her cryo-pod. The leader of this larger group of thugs is none other than Antonio Diego, aka Bane. Bane compelled Victor to help him gain access to Kane International’s corporate headquarters. Bane and his forces will attack it to draw out The Batman, Pittsburgh’s dark defender of justice, so he can exact horrible revenge. In exchange for Victor’s help, Bane will provide as much money and as many resources as he needs to save his wife from her disease. Bane will also provide Victor the super-chemical Lazarus, which could be the key to curing her. As further incentive, Bane revealed he also kidnapped Ferris Boyle, revealing that Boyle lied about Wayne giving the order to shut down Victor’s lab in order to embezzle those MacGregor's research funds for himself. Victor took an icicle hanging from Nora’s cryo-pod and stabbed the tied-up Boyle in the throat with it, killing him. Victor was nowhere near satisfied, though, and now also wants to destroy Wayne, seeing him as a future threat to his wife’s cure. Victor said he’s coming with Bane and his forces… after he gets “properly ready”. A couple of nights later, Bruce Wayne and his fiance Barbara Gordon were planning their wedding in 2018 when Bruce received an alarm on his phone. It was Kane International’s security alarm going off, and security footage he received shows armed goons, looking like a paramilitary force, swarming the building and killing security officers. Bruce sped off, with Barbara wishing him luck, to change into his secret identity, The Batman. Upon his Batcycle, he reached the corporate building and grappled his way to the top to strike the thugs from darkness. Once he sliced a decent swath through the combat force, Batman encountered Bane himself, who escaped prison several months ago. Bane told the Batman that he now has Lazarus pumping through his veins to sustain his broken body (he was crucially, perhaps-irreparably injured in their last fight), and now he’s returned to prove his superiority to Batman. Batman and Bane fought, but someone new to Bane entered the fray: The Robin, the superhero identity of Cassie Kane! Robin’s viciousness in battle got in the way of strategy, and she ended up accidentally foiling Batman, her cousin and mentor. Then, an energy blast struck Robin in the leg, and it froze over in a thick coating of ice. An armored man, Victor Schivel himself, stepped out. Now calling himself Mr. Freeze, Victor fired more energy at both of the vigilantes until they became trapped in what looked like a small iceberg. Proclaiming Batman and Robin dead, Bane and Mr. Freeze, along with Bane’s remaining soldiers, left the K.I. building. Bane and Mr. Freeze went their separate ways after the former delivered his end of the deal. Two nights later, Bane and his forces attacked City Hall during a political fund raising event hosted by Mayor Sharpe. Sharpe, his staff, and the attendees (including Police Captain James Gordon, Barbara’s father, and his men) were held hostage by Bane and his minions. The supervillain declared martial law upon the city of Pittsburgh, demanding the liberation of all prisoners from the American Justice System, or they’ll start murdering their hostages. To demonstrate his power, Bane pumped-up his Lazarus intake from the tanks on his back and ripped the Batsignal, which was on the front lawn of City Hall, from its supports and destroyed it! He looked to the sky to see no more of a symbol of hope being illuminated there, but then he saw dozens of Batsignals beginning to flicker onto the night skies! A small army of armed Pittsburgh citizens, each soldier wearing a bat-inspired costume, poured onto the streets to fight Bane and his men. Then, a tank-like combat vehicle dropped from a roof, landing in front of the bat-army and turned to face Bane. It was the Batman himself, piloting his all-new justice-bringing weapon, The Batmobile! With non-lethal rounds firing from its tank-like turret, the Batmobile helped the citizens blow through Bane’s army and it rammed into Bane himself, smashing through a good five walls of City Hall! This disabled the Batmobile, but Bane is still able and raring to fight. With a Batarang, Batman sliced through a tube connecting Bane’s Lazarus tanks on his back to his body, but this villain is no lumbering fool! He had several sub-muscular implants that pump backup Lazarus into his veins installed into his body. Batman is no fool either, though. He studied Lazarus ever since he was first introduced to it by the Cult of Algol, its creator. That Batarang that sliced through the tube was coated in a translucent liquid… which is an experimental antidote to Lazarus Batman devised! That tiny bit of the antidote that seeped into the tube was enough to neutralize all of the Lazarus in Bane’s body, and he collapsed in a wretched heap. With the day saved, Batman disappeared into the night, with a Javelin (a spaceship used by his team, The Justice League) taking away his disabled Batmobile. Batman and the Batmobile returned to the Batcave, and he made his way to the medical wing. This is where we see Bruce and Cassie recovering from the ice blasts! Cassie was asleep in bed, soothing music playing through headphones on her ears, and Bruce was sitting up in a chair, watching what transpired with Bane from his smart phone. Barbara was also there, caring for Bruce and Cassie. This Batman took off the helmet and reveals himself to us as Rich Grayson, aka Nightwing! Bruce thanked Rich for his help, before thinking to himself how he can help Cassie…

Notes:

* Dr. Leland is a character from the original comics. Her only contribution there is being murdered and replaced by a serial killer named Jane Doe.

* MacGregor’s Syndrome originated in the live-action film Batman & Robin, again as the malady of Freeze’s wife Nora.

* “Schivel” is the original last name of Freeze’s original identity “Mr. Zero”.

* Think of the Batmobile from “Arkham Knight” for the Absolute Batmobile.

* Mr. Freeze will return…
