Description

It was a Saturday morning in Pittsburgh, PA. In the mansion of billionaire William Kane, his daughter Cassie Kane woke up in her bedroom, but, for some reason, wearing the costume of her superhero identity, The Robin. She has no memory of going out on patrol in the city last night, only that she was working on her art before her memory cuts off. Cassie got into normal clothes and investigated her desk, which was bursting with sketches upon sketches of disturbing images. Her phone buzzed, and it was a text from her father, asking her to meet with him in the dining room. Not only was her father there, there was also Cassie’s older cousin Bruce Wayne (who is also Robin’s crime-fighting mentor and partner The Batman) and Bruce’s fiance Barbara Gordon (aka the super-hacker Oracle). They explained that Cassie WAS on patrol as Robin that night. That she had fought a group of criminals that tried to break into a corporate building and brutalized them instead of subduing them, all before passing out. Cassie explained that she has no memory of doing any of that, and Bruce walked her through what he knows.

In a flashback to that night, visible only to us, Cassie was furiously scribbling at her desk; just paper upon paper falling off the desk, covered in sketches of horrific images. When she wore out her supplies, she was still angry and pent up and texted Bruce to say she was going on patrol. On patrol, Robin noticed that there was a break-in in progress at the corporate headquarters of a supermarket chain. Investigating, Robin spied a team of five costumed villains hacking into the servers. Weirdly named The Food Group, these food-themed villains consist of the Condiment King as their leader, along with Agent Orange, Lord Candy, Phoney Baloney, and Gyro Master. Robin attacked from above and battled The Food Group, and she ended up destroying some of the servers they were hacking into for the money. After taking down the other four, Robin went after Condiment King and kicked the air out of him until he surrendered. He explained that The Joker, Batman’s most notorious villain, broke them out of prison, only to torture them within an inch of their lives. The Joker then demanded that they pay him back for busting them out, and provided them with costumes and weapons to do so. Robin was then attacked from behind by one of the other villains, who managed to get back up. This drove Robin to anger and she attacked even harder before collapsing. Batman and the police arrived to assess the situation and Batman carried Robin away. In Cassie’s bedroom, Bruce tended to her injuries and let her sleep in her bed before seeing the papers she had drawn on before going out. He took one of the papers and walked off.

Back with Cassie and her family, Bruce and just finished explaining all he knew about what happened to her and villains. After they talked for a while, Cassie concluded that she needs about a month off from being Robin. She walked away calmly. Bruce then pulled out the piece of paper he took from her room and showed it to Barbara and his Uncle William. It was a visage of Uxas, leader of the Dark Side. Bruce came to the conclusion that she’s experiencing latent side-effects of ANTI_LIFE, a weapon, created to serve the Dark Side, that Cassie was once exposed to…

Notes:

* The criminals that make up “The Food Group” were indeed ‘recruited’ by The Joker from prison and given their costumes and weapons designed by The Joker and created by The Calculator.

** Mitch Mayo, the Condiment King, is the same Mitch who was arrested for an assassination attempt against Oswald Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. His weapons are gauntlets that fire ketchup and mustard with enough pressure to cut through steel.

** Agent Orange, who is citrus-themed, has acid sprayers as weapons.

** Phoney Baloney is a master of disguise and martial arts master.

** Lord Candy has candy-themed weapons and tools.

** Gyro Master has sandwich- and wrap-themed weapons.

I didn't know Condiment King's was Mitch Mayo, until I did some further research. This is hands down the most unique and intriguing version of the characters, I would love to see more of him later down the line.

This was certainly an interesting way to introduce Condiment King’s costumed persona. Poor Cassie...

Heard of most of those names to one degree or another, but not Lord Candy.

Lord Candy was called King Candy is the original comics, but that would be redundant with Condiment King, so I changed it to Lord Candy.
