The FIENDship is Magic series also has some backstory on Tirek, the Dazzlings, Nightmare Moon, and Chrysalis. The Nightmare Moon and Dazzling stories are lame, imo, but the Tirek, Sombra, and Chrysalis ones are really good

i just read all of them (save for the dazzling.. you were right in that it was lame, didn't end up reading the whole thing)i didn't like what they did with Nightmare Moon either.
so basically i agree with you on which ones were good and which ones well...failed utterly lolΒ
i like sombras the best. i really think it's possible he could still be saved... if that chance wasn't there princess amore wouldn't have suggested it. also it's basically confirmed that the princess got put back together since princess amore is the mother of princess mi amore condensa (probably spelled wrong) aka cadance. though since cadance was found as a lone pegasus chances are her mother didn't last long after being put back together...Β

Probably. Or maybe Amore didn't come back at all, and just reincarnated as Cadence instead. I liked the Sombra one best too, but I also like how Chrysalis is basically a zombie made from Starswirl's blood and Tirek is a delinquent

and yeah xD Tirek is a total delinquent who just became hungry for power, but lil Scorpan was so cute.Β
as for the reincarnation, that would require Amore having actually died which she didn't. she was just shattered into pieces that were still alive and could be put back together to return her to her physical form. Considering Sombra himself says he didn't have the heart to kill her.

Interesting this came up. We may never know the origin of Sombra.
I've also seen several interpretations of Discord being Starswirl (after reaching so high a level it fried his mind).
My personal take is that both Sombra and Starswirl were rivals back in their day. Not exactly friends, but not exactly enemies (this would be before Sombra became consumed by dark magic to the extent his eyes started glowing). What may have happened is that the two competed to obtain a position, of royal adviser in the field of magic, within the Crystal Empire (may have been a major hub back in its day due to its background information in the canon). This ultimately came to the two having a magic duel, and Sombra winning fairly.
Due to strongly opposing the practice of dark magic, failing to persuade people in higher places within the empire to disallow it, and now seeing Sombra (an adept, though not yet an overt threat) obtaining a very highly influential position to promote it, he leaves the Crystal Empire permanently. Not sure how he found Celestia, but this would occur many years later (I imagine in his late thirties or early fourties by then). Their working relationship would form not long after that, and his contributions to Canterlot would come to be well documented.
Possibly Sombra ultimately outlived Starswirl, and it was after his passing that his takeover of the Crystal Empire began (I'll say forty to fifty years later).
Headcanons aside, I'm actually glad to see that there are people that are asking these kinds of questions (who are Sombra and Starswirl).

better headcanon than starswirl being discord IMO just because...IDK, I like it more? Discord is more chaotic than evil/dark, and ny headcanon is that Starswirl dabbled too far into the dark arts
