Considering that there is a theory going around that Starswirl the Bearded was trying to become an Alicorn (hence the unfinished spell that transformed Twlight) it would make sense that in his desperation and hubris he turns to dark magic.
Maybe he came to the Crystal Empire in an attempt to harness the power of the Crystal Heart, failed, succumbed to madness and corruption, conquered the empire and was forcing the Crystal Ponies to dig in search of another crystal powerful enough to generate some kind of spell (the Elements Of Harmony were what transformed Twilight and they were gems before they became jewellery). Hence the press gang of enslaved Crystal Ponies coming out of a mine beneath the Imperial Palace.

What if...King Sombra was actually Starswirl and Discord was his dragon assistant, just like Twilight and Spike? And when the spell went wrong, Starswirl's dragon assistant became Discord and Starswirl became King Sombra?

I actually think the reverse would be true. Also, Starswirl becoming Discord allows "Keep Calm and Flutter On" to finish his arc beautifully, as he finally realizes the value of friendship,his ignorance of which caused him to become Discord in the first place.

I don't think so. He already wields power that may even be greater than that of an alicorn (Celestia sure seemed reluctant to face him head-on), so an ascension wouldn't make any sense for him.

It's like you didn't even READ the comic. "She looked like a completely different mare altogether." Nightmare Moon had different coat colours, proportions, voice, eyes, mane, plus the armour.
If Star Swirl went through a similar transformation, don't you think there's a chance he might lose his beard? It's Star Swirl the bearded, not "Sombra the Bearded."
