You wouldn't believe how many goddamn idiots ACTUALLY think the reason Sombra ISN'T Star Swirl is because he doesn't have a beard.
It's Star Swirl the Bearded, not "Sombra the Bearded."

It's cause I like good arguments, and that was also meant as a joke, even if he is Sombra now he's not Star Swirl because he doesn't have the badass beard.

Incidentally, the word "sombra" is derived from the word "umbra" and has astronomical relations pertaining to stars and such.

Another thing to note is that the name "Sombra" could be his evil nickname, based on what his original name was, much akin to how "Luna = Nightmare Moon" so getting Sombra out of Starswirl fits well enough.

I didn't even think about that until recently, when i saw a comic with the 'Starswirl became Discord' theory. Let's hope season 4 gives us at least a little background info on Starswirl so we can find out the truth

The idea is that Star Swirl may have undergone a similar transformation, as when Luna turned into Nightmare Moon.
Luna = Nightmare Moon
Star Swirl = Sombra

I prefer the connection to Discord mostly because of the look, the beard, and the idea of a wizard who never had a friend (no magic of friendship) and experimented with chaos magic.

Please, you need a beard to be Starswirl the Bearded. Discord is a far more likely candidate and actually has some evidence supporting his claim.
Doesn't matter anyway, Word of God says that Sombra is dead as a doornail and was completely uncharismatic.

And personally, I would rather Starswirl the Bearded WASN'T Discord. I still have my doubts as to the theory. Hell, I viciously denounced it for a while last year. But it makes a sickening amount of sense now that I've had time to consider it. And then there's the matter of the supposed leaked script lines from the Season 4 premiere...

I'm pretty sure these were leaked BEFORE the episode where Twilight turned a frog into an orange was aired. But I could be wrong. Take these with a grain of salt.
In the meanwhile, note that Discord has stars appear everywhere when he uses his powers and/or teleports. He also has a beard. And if Starswirl created that one big spell but didn't understand it, what would have happened if he cast it?
