I for one like this suggestion better than the Discord one. It would be interesting, but I think it far less likely be wise as a pony Starswirl most likely would have had friends, which makes the Keep Calm and Flutter On episode completely moot if he turned into Discord. I don't believe he turned into Sombra either, but I think it is an interesting idea and certainly COULD have happened.

Now see, I find this far more believable than Star Swirl becoming Discord. However having said that, I must also say I find Star Swirl becoming King Sombra ridiculous as well. Admittedly, less ridiculous than him becoming Discord, but still ridiculous, if only because he would have been a FAR more powerful and imposing villain.

I don't like evil Sombra from beginning because element stationed there nevertheless. Just like in "Crystal Heart Spell" if you use good artifact in not accurate way it will amplify your bad side and eventually with 'black magic' turn user into worthless shell of immense power.

Of course Starswirl is older than Discord, Starswirl became Discord thus marking the end of Starswirl and the beginning of Discord. But there are other possible continuity errors. For example, I think Celestia said she knew Starswirl, but also that when she first came to Equestria, she and Luna found the land engulfed in Chaos. Both of those things can't be true... can they?

He had his own wing in Canterlot, we know that Canterlot was build by Celestia and allied ponies. Thus he is not a fighter just spell making worm and has no place in defeating Discord drama. Outcome is quite not good: he is evil or Celestia is evil. Both fearsome.
