Hmm... This is ALSO a neat a idea, and goes along well with the idea the Starswirl could be Discord.
We really have no clue, but it's neat to speculate.
I personally like the Discord/Starswirlidea better.

Huh. That IS an interesting idea, I actually would like that even better, if such a flat villain got this level of development. I don't feel too positively about that though. Also...Sombra kind of ka-sploded. Sort of not in the agenda for him to be uncorrupted at least on Celestia's time, even if we do see him being resurrected for whatever reason. It WOULD nicely explain how Celestia ever learned dark magics in the first place.

Who is star swirl?

Star Swirl the Bearded is an ancient unicorn wizard (he predates the founding of Equestria). He developed time travel spells, is known as the "father of the omniomorphic spell," andΒ tried to complete some epic spell which Twilight ultimately completed, and which transformed her into an alicorn. He also wore sleigh bells on his hat and cloak.
He was referred to in Luna Eclipsed (Twilight dressed as him for Nightmare Night), It's About Time (Twilight used one of his time-travel spells in the "Star Swirl the Bearded wing of the Canterlot Library"), Hearth's Warming Eve (Clover the Clever, one of the three founders of Equestria, was Star Swirl's apprentice), and Magical Mystery Cure (Twilight successfully completed a spell which Star Swirl himself had left unfinished).

Ever since coming across a certain comic, i like to believe that Discord is what became of Starswirl the Bearded.

i have heard theories that it is actuall discord who is starswhirled. it is obviuos he was attempting to create a spell capable of turning someone bound to the element of harmony into an alicorn. some say his lack of understanding caused him to mutate into discord.
.......actually there is a reason why luna transformed that is shown in the comics, expanded on one can say. she became depressed and insecure that no one was awake during the day, believing her subjects disliked her. it turns out the power that turned her into nightmare moon was embodied by shadowy spirits that tricked her, telling her they could help her become beloved by her people.
this was revealed during an arc where these same spirits possess one of the mane six in fact...... comics fairly good. except they make fluttershy somewhat of a tsundere, and she looks like she is being raped by satan when she gets made......

Luna is hard to fit with courage, but I guess its okay since she apparently roams through dreams teaching ponies to face their fears. Courage!
