Description Dwala ("rock" in Zulu) is the daughter of Nguvu and Kuishi, the sister of Naanda, Sarabi, Diku, Chuki, Kulaani, and Zira, the mate of Kondo, and the mother of Tojo.

Dwala, like her twin Diku, is very young when their father is killed. She doesn't remember very much of him at all, just that he was very kind to her and that he loved to mess around with her and Diku. However, she is old enough to remember how much damage his death does to her mother. Her mother becomes distant towards her and her siblings, though Dwala nor her sister Diku understand why. And when her new siblings Zira, Kulaani, and Chuki are born, Dwala nor Diku can understand why her mother hates them so much. It isn't until later, when she and Diku older, that she learns the truth behind her younger siblings' conception and the death of her father: Zira, Kulaani, and Chuki are the children of the lion who killed her father, forced upon her mother before his own death at the hands of their pride's lionesses.

Unlike Diku, who takes this information in stride and becomes more outgoing and confident, Dwala instead becomes much more quiet and reserved. She begins to question the sincerity of others, and becomes distrustful of those she doesn't know all that well. She especially becomes more cautious around males. What if they turn out to be just like that monster who killed her father and raped her mother? Diku tries to tell her not to worry about it, that it's unlikely that kind of thing will happen to her, especially now that they've moved into the Pride Lands, but Dwala can't be so sure. She sticks by Diku like glue for the most part, for her twin has always been there to protect her and, in her mind, always will be.

A while later, after Sarabi marries Mufasa and has a son with him, Dwala begins to long for cubs of her own. She sees how happy Sarabi is with Simba. She wants to experience the joys of motherhood, too. But of the few adult males in the pride, none of them interest her. They're either too growly, too goofy, too boisterous, or too bland. Yet, Dwala doesn't want to leave the Pride Lands in search of a rogue mate either. She fears that if she leaves the safety of the Pride Lands, she may be attacked by a rogue male just as her mother and father were years ago. But she desperately wants cubs, so she manages to convince Diku to come with her in her search for a mate. She feels much safer with her stronger, tougher twin by her side.

It's not long before the encounter a couple of rogues -cousins- not too far from the Pride Land's boarders. Unlike the vicious rogue who attacked her parents, these rogues are nice, and one of them, the lion known as Kondo, is quite willing to fulfill her request and give her cubs. They leave his cousin and Diku behind and go somewhere more private. Dwala is, of course, very nervous, though it's not because she's about to become a mother. Rather it's because she's now all alone with this male, and even though he seems nice enough (and Diku's only a roar away), she's afraid he'll turn out to be vicious.

Kondo seems to sense that Dwala is nervous of him, and instead of trying to mate her right away, he instead decides to make small talk first. He introduces himself to her, and he tells her all about himself and his cousin, where they came from, and why they left. She learns that he and his cousin, Njaa, come from an all-female pride, and that once males reach the age of 18 they are kicked out of the pride, where they then go to join an all-male pride near by. He and Njaa decided that instead of joining the all-male pride that they would instead go rogue together, partly because they wanted to see the world some, but also because of Njaa's unusually large appetite causing trouble within a pride setting. Dwala is fascinated by this gender segrigation of the lions, and is curious as to why.

"Because boys and girls can't live together equally without one gender being superior over the other. They'll always be fighting if they live together, so it's better if they live appart. At least, that's what Mom always said." Kondo says.

Dwala thinks this is silly. Sure, there have been instances of males dominating over females, and vice versa, but if they work together each gender can be equal in the eyes of the other. Kondo seems to agree with her, and states that he never really believed any of the bullshit his mother told him, unlike Njaa and the others, which is another, more personal reason for him for not joining the all-male pride. He never really fit in with his pride's strange way of thinking, so he decided to leave with Njaa to find somewhere where lions thought similarly to him. In a way, his attitude somewhat reminds Dwala of Diku, and she begins to calm down some.

Dwala tells Kondo then where she is from. She tells the male all about her home land, what happened to her father, and her pride joining the Royal Pride in the Pride Lands. She tells him that both males and females lived in the Pride Lands together, although there were more females than males due to the fact that many of their males, once old enough, liked to strike out on their own as rogues. Kondo seems just as intrigued by her pride-life as she was with his. He asks if the genders were equal, to which Dwala tells them they were.

"The King and Queen share their responsibilities between each other, and while the lionesses hunt, the male lions patrol the boarders, keeping them safe from those who wish to harm us. No one gender is more important than the other." she tells him.

Kondo likes the sound of that, and asks if, after mating with her, it would be alright if he and his cousin returned to the Pride Lands with her and her sister. Dwala doesn't see why not, and agrees to let them come back with them. They mate that night, and when they return to Diku and Njaa in the morning, they find that they weren't the only ones getting busy. Njaa has decided to become Diku's mate, so when Kondo tells him that they were leaving for the Pride Lands, he's all for it. All four of them return back to the Pride Lands that day, and King Mufasa welcomes Kondo and Njaa with open arms.

It turns out that the first mating did not get Dwala pregnant. She returns to Kondo, who has now become a boarder guard, and asks him to mate with her again. She has grown fond of this male, for not only is he handsome and charming, but he's confident and strong as well. Kondo agrees, and after a couple of more attempts, Dwala finally becomes pregnant. During her pregnancy, Kondo has decided to remain faithful to Dwala and stay as her mate alone. Kondo tells her that he wants to be the father he never had to their cubs, and that during his time here in the Pride Lands he has fallen in love with Dwala. Dwala is more than happy to take on Kondo as her full-time mate, for she, too, has fallen in love with Kondo.

Only a few weeks after Diku gives birth to her cubs, Dwala gives birth to her own cubs. However, it seems like the pregnancy was not a successful one. All of the cubs seem to be still-born, and Dwala can't help but grieve over the loss of the cubs she never got to know. Kondo does his best to comfort his distraught mate, telling her they could try again when she is ready, but when he takes the cubs to bury them, he suddenly stops mid-stride and sets them down again. Shoving two of the three dead cubs aside, he puts his ear to a small, dark golden-brown cub.

"Dwala! This one's alive!" he cries out, and immediately brings it back to her, where Dwala frantically begins to lick the cub to warm him up and get his blood flowing. It takes a moment, but soon Dwala and Kondo hear the most beautiful sound they've ever heard: the cry of their newborn son. It's a weak cry, but a cry none the less, and it isn't long before the boy is at her belly suckling away. Against all odds the boy, whom they name "Tojo," lives.

Dwala keeps an ever watchful eye on her son as he grows, never letting him out of her sight for too long. Many, including her sisters and Kondo, call her overprotective, but she has a good reason; Tojo may have survived, but his body is still weak. The boy tended to get sick easier than most. His right back leg is also weaker than his other legs, and tends to get injured easily due to this weakness. Yet for all her coddling, Tojo still grows to be a selfless, gentle boy with a heart of gold. He even takes in some orphaned baby birds, much to Dwala's chagrin.

When Scar takes over the Pride Lands after the death of Mufasa and the supposed death of Simba, Scar orders all adult males to leave the Pride Lands. Kondo, along with Bititi's mate Zulekha and another male, openly refuse to leave. At first Dwala doesn't think Scar is going to do anything, for he's simply sitting there, staring at them with a bored expression on his face. Then, with a flick of his tail, the hyenas attack, and before anyone can react, it's over. Kondo, Zulekha, and the other male are all dead. Dwala can't believe her eyes. Kondo, her love, is gone...? Just like that...? Dwala collapses into hysterics after that, and Diku and Sarabi do their best to comfort her as well as her grief stricken son.

Dwala isn't much the same after that. She becomes much, much more paranoid than before, and refuses to let Tojo out of her sight, even for a second. She fears that Scar will do the same to her baby boy as he did to Kondo, and she can't let that happen. So even as Tojo grows into a teenager, she makes him stick to her like glue, never letting him leave her even to play with his friends. Soon though she's forced to let her son go when it is decided that all the remaining males -Tojo, Chumvi, and Heri- must leave, due to the fact that it is no longer safe for them here in the Pride Lands. Not that it was safe for them in the beginning, but the death of Diku's son Mtoto solidifies this fact. So, with Scar's permission (he's been wanting to get rid of them for awhile now anyways), they send the young teens and cub off to Malka's pride in the Rock Lands where they'll be safer.

When Simba returns to fight Scar, Dwala joins her sisters and pridemates in the fight for Pride Rock. She fights off hyena after hyena, fighting to finally avenge her deceased mate, when suddenly she notices that her twin is in danger. Diku isn't paying attention to what's going on around her, to focused on beating the living daylights out of the hyenas in front of her, and a rather large hyena is taking advantage of that. The hyena lunges, and Dwala leaps to intercept, never once thinking of her own safety. Diku always protected her when they were younger, and now it was her turn to protect Diku. The hyena's jaws latch into her neck, ripping her throat out, all while Dwala tears into the hyena's belly. Both drop to the ground, and the last thing Dwala sees before bleeding out is her twin standing over her with tears in her eyes, begging her to get up.

NOTE: This is my version of the lioness known as Dwala, who was supposed to be one of Sarabi's three sisters. I decided to make the lioness to the far left looking down at Sarabi here pridelands.eu/hd/image7573.htm… Dwala, while making the lioness to her right her twin sister Diku. I also decided that Dwala would be the mother of Tojo, hence the reason why Simba and Tojo look so similar: They're cousins.
