Description Kamatu ("if only" in Swahili) is the son of Nuka and Kiara, the brother of Majuto and Adhra, the mate of Wangeweza, and the father of Alfajiri and Upya.

Kamatu is born in an alternate universe where Kovu actually did as Zira instructed and killed Simba, taking over the Pride Lands and becoming it's new Dark King in Scar's place. As such, those of the remaining royal line (a.k.a Kiara and Nala) are kept imprisioned, used as pawns so that the Pridelanders that were loyal to Simba do their new King's bidding, less he kill the late Simba's mate and daughter. It is during this dark time that Kiara meets an unlikely sympathizer - Scar's true heir and Kovu's adopted older brother, Nuka. The two strike up an unlikely friendship, due to their mutual hatred for Kovu, and eventually fall in love. Their love produces three cubs.

Kamatu is the firstborn, and reminds many of the late Simba. This, of course, brings him negative attention from both King Kovu and King-Mother Zira, who hate him for his resembelence and relation to their deceased enemy. Nuka and Kiara both fear that Kamatu and his siblings may be targeted by the two evil lions simply for being related to Simba, and do their best to keep the cubs away from their wicked uncle and grandmother. As such, they grow up hating and fearing them, as well as their Aunt Vitani and cousin Wangeweza.

The cubs grow up sticking close to their parents and trusted pride-members who were once loyal to Simba, never straying far. Kiara at this point has already told them what Kovu and Zira had done to their grandfather, and what they could to them if they stray to far away from either her or Nuka. And they have no reason not to believe their mother; the angry snarls from their uncle and the looks of pure death from their grandmother are enough to tell them that their mother speaks truth. Kamatu is braver than his siblings, however. While he still does stay close to his parents, when possible he'll throw insults and nasty looks towards his hated family members, especially towards little Wangeweza, since she's the least likely to fight back. Neither of his parents condone this, but neither do they stop him, either.

One day, some months after the birth of his cousins/aunts to his grandmother Nala, his uncle approaches him while he's playing with his siblings and some other cubs. Immediately the other cubs all dart away to safety, but Kamatu holds his ground, glaring at his uncle with distrust and disgust. Kovu has a wicked grin on his face, one that does not bode well, and Kamatu fears that this is the day that he and his siblings have all feared since they were old enough to walk - the day their uncle kills them. Already he could hear his father approaching from behind with an angry snarl, but Kovu's already in front of him. It'd just take a flick of his paw for him to kill Kamatu. Nuka wouldn't make it in time. But Kamatu does not show fear in his eyes, only anger and spite.

"What do you want, King-Killer?" he spits out, hackles raised.

"Watch your tongue, boy." Kovu growls. "You're lucky I need you, otherwise I'd rip it out of your head, amongst other things."

This causes Kamatu to pause.

"What do you mean, you need me?" he asks, giving his uncle a look of distrust.

"Simple. I need a male heir, and as my nephew, and a descendant of both Scar and Mufasa, you're the best choice for the job. So, boy, listen up and listen well. Starting tomorrow, you will be known as my heir and my daughter's future husband. You will start your kingly lessons with me as well. I will teach you everything you need to know, from fighting to diplomacy. When I'm done with you, you will be ready to be the next King of the Pride Lands."

Kamatu is in shock, and so is his father, who had managed to hear the tail end of the conversation.

"Me? King?"

"That's what I said, boy."

"But...what if I don't want to be your heir?" Kamatu asks slowly.

The cruel grin that crosses Kovu's maw makes the blood in Kamatu's veins freeze.

"Then I guess I have no need for you, your siblings, or your pretty little mother, now do I?"

Needless to say, Kamatu agreed to train under Kovu, however much he despised it. He trained day in and day out, learning from not only Kovu but from his grandmother Zira. Though they did teach him about some things like diplomacy, they mostly taught him how to be a killer like them. Not a day went by that he didn't have scratches or bruises on his body from their ruthless training. But he endured, if only to keep his siblings and mother safe.

One day, as a young adult, not long after he's married his betrothed, he decides that he's had enough of Kovu and his evilness. At this point Zira is dead and gone, but Kovu is still around and is still ruining the Pride Lands. But he's growing older, and Kamatu decides that it's either now or never that he gets rid of the monster that is his uncle and set things right within the Pride Lands once more. Kamatu challenges the King for the throne, and Kovu accepts, thinking Kamatu a fool for daring to challenge him and his rule. After all, having trained the boy himself, he knew everything he was capable of. The two fight long and hard, but eventually youth wins out, and Kamatu ends up the victor, claiming the throne for himself. Everyone cheers and roars for him, even Wangeweza and Vitani, and everyone accepts him as the new king. The herds return, the Pride Lands once more begin to flourish, and Kamatu couldn't be happier.

He's avenged his grandfather at last, he's freed his pride and his family from Kovu's terrible wrath, and in the end he's found love in the one lioness he never thought he would - Wangeweza. All that was wrong has finally been put right....

For now.

NOTES: So if Kovu's a baddie and is messing things up in the Pride Lands in this AU, someone's got to be the good guy and stop him, right? Well, this guy sure fits the bill! I briefly consitered having Kovu win and Kamatu dying, but I decided not to go the dark route this time, although this AU is generally much darker than the canon-universe.
