Description The mysterious Black Onyx is the first non-birthstone (and I use the term loosely, because just about every stone is a birthstone at some point, in one culture or another) in my Gemstone Fairies series. In one myth, Onyx came into being when Cupid mischievously cut the fingernails of Venus while she slept and scattered them over the Earth. Since no part of a God could die, the clippings became the stone known as "Onyx" which means claw or nail.

Brimming with understated elegance, the Onyx Fairy's dark beauty never has to try too hard to be noticed. Black Onyx whispers, it never shouts.

Thank you, I'm glad you like the dress. Lol, when I designed it I was thinking "what would Angelina Jolie wear on the red carpet?" I wanted that mysterious sorta sophisticated glamor.

There is a feeling of power in this figure, of dark beauty that is more brilliant than many of the pale luminescent colors. The shades of purple and red-purple accent the onyx perfectly.

This is truly magical. Black is a "colour" that puts a lot of viewers off but your use of it gives it weight and depth. I like the lines, the movement in this one, like in most of your creations. There is great passion behind your work.

Thank you! I love black too, I don't think there's anything quite so mysteriously elegant. And you're right,
i do put a lot of passion into my work, I'm glad it shows through!

Don't recall you mentioning it... but my head is so full with things because of my wedding (less than 3 weeks to the day) that you could have done so...
Of course it's OK hon! I'm honoured... Can't wait to join your collection again!!

I'll be uploading some photos, yes... purely as a non-stock thingy, but I'd like all my friends here on DA to share my day... if you cannot be here with me, I'll bring the wedding to all of you

I'll upload a journal closer to the day with the details of the crazy final months/weeks/days even lool

Oh wonderful!!! Lol, I can't imagine you WOULD want to make stock of your wedding photos, I'd just love to see the pictures! I've got to get a move on and start planning my own wedding, I have a bad anxiety disorder that makes me drag my heels like you wouldn't believe when it comes to being the center of attention.

No, I've never heard that. Interesting!

slayerstephi In reply to redheaded-step-child [2008-05-08 04:34:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I just learned that recently. Natural onyx is dyed black. I read it in a gemstone book. I didn't believe it at first because I was so used to onyx being black.

Beautiful, rich colors! Is this all watercolor?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

redheaded-step-child In reply to AlexandraRena [2008-05-08 01:52:40 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! Yep, it's watercolor, almost all of my pieces are. A few are digital, but I always put it in the description when they are.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AlexandraRena In reply to redheaded-step-child [2008-05-08 02:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. I was just curious as to how you got those dark colors to be so dark! How much water (in droplets) do you add to x amount of paint? (if it's from the tube)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

redheaded-step-child In reply to AlexandraRena [2008-05-08 03:51:17 +0000 UTC]

It's mostly Windsor Newton "Neutral Tint", out of the tube. I like using that and Windsor Newton or Daniel Smith Payne's Gray for my darkest shades. If I know I'll be using a lot, I'll mix up a little well of color, until it looks like ink, and build it up in layers.

AlexandraRena In reply to redheaded-step-child [2008-05-08 07:37:30 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, sounds good! I'll have to try that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

redheaded-step-child In reply to AlexandraRena [2008-05-08 16:33:13 +0000 UTC]

I use a heavier hand with the paint than a watercolorist is technically supposed to, so the darker pieces are easy for me.
