Description While browsing on the Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab perfume site [link] deciding on my first order, someone suggested I try the scent "Thaleia". As soon as I clicked on the description, I knew I had to paint a series on the Muses! I was literally inspired by the Muses in this case, it just goes to show that inspiration can strike in the most wonderfully unexpected places!

Since Thaleia, the Muse of Comedy, was the original inspiration, I decided to paint her first. A warm, merry, goddess, Thaleia was often depicted with the classic mask of Comedy, and a shepherd's crook, to symbolize her affinity for pastoral poetry.

Except, I think her name is spelled like this "Thalia"
I don't want to sound like a know-it-all but I read about her
and that's the correct way to spell the Greek muse's name. lol

Beautiful, warm, and joyful! All of which makes comedy so enjoyable.

I'm wondering, how do you paint such fine contour lines? With a small brush I am assuming, but that hardly ever works for me :/

really joyful picture, colours and expression are fantastic, I like the texture of the water-colour paper too.

Thank you so much Isabel, I really loved painting this one! It was so much fun to paint a goddess that embodies laughter and happiness! Calliope will be a challenge, as the eldest and chief of the Muses she'll have to be very grand and elegant. I think I may have her writing thoughtfully on a tablet...

Thanks Irina! Oh, I forgot to mention the ivy crown in the description! Some of the Muses wear crowns or carry wreaths of something or other, and Thaleia is often mentioned as wearing ivy. Not really sure why... but I really like ivy so I included it.
