Little has been spoken of this place called the Nether. Poring through the village's library, all I had managed to find were fragments of information. Some books said it was hell; others said no one had ever returned to tell the tale... But there was one thing in common in all these manuals - how to get there.I set to work, collecting the necessary objects - Obsidian was the key to creating the portal. The Villagers advised me not to - even warding me away from the village, not wanting these mythical creatures I had never heard of to enter our world. So I left them, and returned to my home I had built away from these people.
The portal was complete, and I performed the ritual correctly - the portal was ablaze in an eerie purple light - I felt prepared, armed and ready for whatever may be on the other side.
With a deep breath, I stepped through the portal.
The sight was spectacular. Everything was so... hot. Lava ran down all the walls, even the rock that crumbled beneath my feet was warm to the touch and of a reddish hue. There were plenty of fires and it just seemed to go on endlessly.
In the distance, I could see a dark silhouette of a huge ominous structure. Curiosity got the better of me. I stepped down from the portal and began to explore this hellish new world.

Aw man, this reminds me of my first time going to the nether. I opened the world up to lan, brought my bros on, and spoke the words: "Brothers! Ready your golden apples and eat hearty, for tonight...we mine...IN HELL!". We then rushed forward, swords in hand, ready to brave the fire. Then we got shot by ghasts and beat up by pigmen. Still had fun, though.

Well, I still have a lot to learn still, but perhaps you could upload some of your work so I can give you some pointers and feedback if you want? Feedback is the best way to help others improve on their work, I might not always say it in my descriptions, but I always crave it.
So yeah, upload some stuff and I'll get critting right away! ^_^

Backgrounds are hard and you've definitely got one here! The person though feels like they are plopped on top of it because the shading is backwards. The light from the lava 'should' be hitting their front and leaving their back in shadow. We don't know of course if there is more lava behind them, but in this instance, as a picture it would look awesome to incorporate more shadows.

Ah, well I guess I can explain the lighting issues, because Erin (the character here) has just stepped from a portal, which emits a purple light, and coming from the Overworld there's some natural light seeping through as well. I tried to make the shading darker because she isn't exactly right next to the lava enough to light her up, and I didn't want the shading to go too dark otherwise it'd blend too much with the background, and I wanted to keep a contrast between the foreground and the background =/
I guess I could try strengthening the shadows ^_^

Hmm, perhaps. I tried to show the notion that the portal is just off screen by the purple glow and hint of particle effects

The heat coming from the lava and fire is awesome, you did really well with the colours there. The main issue I see is with the arm on our left, but I see from the previous comments you've already figured that out so no worries there. The only thing I can really add here is more of a suggestion than anything - making the shadows a bluish/purple tint might help the colours pop more since purple compliments yellow and provides contrast, but the dark reddish shadows you're currently using are also nice in that they add to the firey element of the piece. It's really a matter of preference, and just something to experiement with if you feel like it

Hmm, I considered using purples and blues for shading, but since I already envisioned the Netherrack to be a purplish red, I figured using colder tones would make the image look a lot colder than it is, with all that searing hot lava everywhere =/
And yeah, the Nether is one impressive place for scenery. It's definitely prettier than the overworld XD
