On their own, Goldfish aren't very useful but in a group of ten they'll easily kill any mobs that walk into their lake. However, goldfish only attack 'undead' mobs so if you're being chased by creepers, spiders or endermen they'll simply not care. You can make five at once by placing a gold block in (at least) a 2 block deep river/lake/pond and placing a pumpkin on the gold block.
