Description
As a kid, this used to be my favorite season. This was mostly attributed to the fact that I watched it the most, but also it was because this season felt a lot more varied with its plots. Although this season doesn't hold up as my favorite season, I still love it to this day.One thing to note is that this season does spice up the show quite a bit. S1-4 focused more on simplistic yet effective stories generally geared toward jokes. While S5 definitely had some of these plots, it also experimented a lot with the show's formula. The obvious change being the shorts format. There were 5 episodes this season where instead of the usual 2 11 minute style, it would instead be 1 4 minute episode, 1 7 minute episode, and 1 11 minute episode. I really enjoy this format and I wish they kept it for later seasons, but it does make this season more unique in comparison. These more shorter episodes allow for more interesting character dynamics in a more shorter runtime thus preventing the episode from dragging out. Although the first of these (83 trio) was good, this would be more effective in other trios where the writers would make the most out of the short runtime for a simplistic yet effective piece of content. While the show always had simplistic plots, this format showcased how these plots could work in a different way, and it paid off well.
Similar to season 4, this season favored stronger plots, however I do feel like this season favored plots a bit too much. That's not a bad thing, but compared to S4 it really did feel like this season went either one direction or the other. As much as I love BlackJack, I'll admit that episode could've used a bit more comedy, while vice-versa could be said about Stanley S. SquarePants, which barely has an interesting plots and is mostly held up by its pretty solid joke line-up. This is also why there's less perfect episodes here than S3-4, however this season still has a handful of episodes that can fit in right with those seasons, such as New Digs or Sing a Song of Patrick. Plus some episodes can do a really good job at creating clever stories with interesting twists like prior season, obvious example being Roller Cowards.
While S4 focused more on character personalities, this season focused more on the LORE of SpongeBob. What do I mean by that? Well, the first episode of this season, Friend or Foe, explained Mr. Krabs and Plankton's backstory and how they became rivals. In-general this episode was really interesting, funny, and went in a route that was actually quite unpredictable and the surprise that Plankton used to be Mr. Krabs' best friend is something that still shocks me to this day. Throughout this season, SpongeBob's relatives got a lot of interest, with several of his cousins being introduced, more focus on his parents, as well as Pest of the West focusing on his long old ancestor.
Other aspects of this season include the show's first TV movie, Atlantis SquarePantis. This is quite a well-hated special but I actually thought it was really good with creative visuals and good plot progression and parodying, even if the songs were pretty lame. This season is home to the first bad episode since S1, Breath of Fresh Squidward, an episode which just angered me with its bad characterization and its lame take on a semi "mind-swapping" plot. Lastly, the animation here does feel more modernized. Although S4 had more smoother animation you could still see some signs of pre-movie roughness, while S5 looks completely clean. This is probably because this was the point where they started using tablets instead of digital, though I'm not too sure on this fact. It does look more stiff but there is still some expression, and the coloring is much nicer than later post-movie seasons. In the end, the animation's decent but nothing stand-out.
Season 5 is a season that's very different from the original 4 seasons and does have aspects that might make this season a turn-off, but it's still a very amazing season due to how creative the plots got here, unique episode formats, interesting ideas, as well as just simply being an interesting season overall. Although there are more weaker episodes here, the best episodes make up for that, and I can easily put this season with the classic episodes since these episodes rival some of the best episodes from those seasons. Next up is season 6 which is the supposed first "bad" season of the show.
