Description
I made this a while back for some friends who had questions about my layer set up before I begin actually painting my pieces. The piece is unfinished but it's a good look at how things appear before I start painting over with details and refining. This is super messy since I never meant it to serve as a tutorial so much as a quick glance of my approach but I plan on posting some more of these with more detail since I get a lot of questions about how I approach color/etc.

I've been wanting to see something like this really badly!!! The layer breakdown is great. It's really cool seeing what's actually on the layer, and the layer style.

this is super fascinating and useful! I always add the lighting layers last, I hadn't even thought of doing it as part of the sketch/initial composition process. gonna try this out~

I usually end up adding some adjustments at the very end too (i always end up losing shadows somehow) but I definitely need them in the underneath or I get really overwhelmed trying to make it work as I go!
