Description

wow what a yucky layout, I've never been good at the presentation side of things, but I'm even worse when I'm putting in the minimum amount of effort, sorry 'bout that

---

I'm currently a bit sick (nothing serious, mostly just annoying) so I haven't been able to do the 2 commissions per weekend-type thing this time around. Trying to recover as quickly as possible. Which is why I thought it would be a good opportunity to show what I've been doing during animation classes (exercises and personal sketching)

Character Design:

The first two sessions was pretty free in what we were allowed to do, the prompts were as simple as they are written, and the main point was to redo the same thing but with the critiques in mind (not every sketch was critiqued, but we simply were asked to go further and further and not shy away from clichés or exaggeration amongst other things)
I'm still a bit wonky with designs geared towards animation, what with my love for semi-realism. But I think with my villain-character I'm taking steps in the right direction.
Oh and for prompts 1.-3. we were given each time 15 minutes to do each sketch

Observation sketches: I don't think it needs much explaining, I haven't included every page of sketches, because it might be a bit too repetitive

Clean-up/inbetweening/motion stuff //

we have one and the same teacher for those three courses, and we've mostly been doing introductory kinda stuff for now with these first couple exercises. It was quite interestingly challenging to draw a style of character design as accurately as possible.

We of course have digital art classes as well (one for drawing, one for the technical aspect of animation (how to organize stuff-film making aspect) and of course 3D-modeling as well) But we haven't got anything proper to show yet, since those generally needed quite a lot of introductory info. The main focus there is for now probably to really learn the ins&outs of the program and hotkeys

Concerning the sketchdump, the only thing I wanted to mention is that the bottom right corner features sketches made off of Muybridge photographies (reference we were given to draw that Popeye's character in some of those poses) If you've even done just one google search on animal run cycles, you've probably come across his horse series www.arte.it/foto/600x450/81/26… Did you know he has books on both "animals in motion" and "human figure in motion" with tons of gold animation reference material??? I certainly didn't, but it's definitely on my "books to absolutly buy"-list

---

Just wanna mention that I'm simplifying a lot of info here, and these are just the starting-out classes as well, which all will upgrade bit by bit with every semester >:0c

What school are you going to?

It's not entirely straightforward, I take a "BTS" / Bachelor course offered by what is actually a highschool equivalent. ("BTS" is a 2-year degree, and this course just recently extended to a possible third year, making it a Bachelor)
The school I'm going to is "Lycée des Arts et Métiers" in Luxembourg :>

Tell me more about the program. How is it different in Europe?
Currently, I am attending SCAD as MFA.

Well what I'm doing isn't a good example of a standard European degree program. From my understanding, a "BTS" (Brevet de technicien supérieur) is specifically a French type of degree, usually an option to take between the French equivalent of high school and college/university in case you'd need more qualifications to get into the place you want (or if you want to study a bit more, but want to start working after 2 years?)

Like some animation schools are reeeally tough to get into, and they maybe ask for a portfolio with already finished animation projects, or 12 months of "prior experience in the field". A BTS program in animation would provide you all of that.
But alas, the school I'm going to is now offering a Bachelor's degree as well, which needed that extra third year. I'll still get a BTS diploma after the first 2 years, but I can now decide if I want to do the extended Bachelor's program after that as well.

A more normal program would be the 4 year Master of Arts program in Gobelins for example (one of those school that is difficult to get into)

So it's like a pre-college program? It sounds more convenient. Europe is historically known for fine art, film, and animation, which makes it more feasible to have a learn and have a job there.

Usually, a decent animation school, make it tough to make sure you are qualified, balance our population with finance and is more individualized. This way it that artistic recognition and great quality of education towards the field you want to be in.
It was somewhere I wanted to go. My portfolio needed more and scholarships were a definite factor for me to get there.

Your classes sound so fun and educational! God, I wish my school was more than just "here's the assignment, now do whatever and don't expect any help". Getting thrown into the deep sure teaches you how to swim but I think it's important to note than after starting out with a class of 13 in the first year there are now only 5 people (inc. me) left in the 3rd year.
It's frustrating as hell having to learn by trial and error and waste a lot of time.

Oh well, it's good to see your improvement! Your humans are looking like you've been drawing them for years and years.
And that thing about having difficulty making designs for animation, I used to struggle with it too.
It's sometimes annoying when you gravitate more towards realism to simplify your designs but I'm sure you'll quickly find the golden middle ground.

You mean like, take it out of my sketchbook and send it via mailed letter? :0 I've never sold any of my traditional artwork online before, so I'm quite unfamiliar with the process
(Also, I draw on both sides of my sketchbook, if I were to cut out one single sketch, I'd mess up the things drawn on the backside as well :< )

I would love it if u kept giving updates and explenations for what u work on in school. It is very cool to get an in depth look at what it's like at animating school. It begins to give me an idea for what all the successful animators who worked on some of my favorite movies must have gone through to get to that point! It's very interesting!

Sorry, but not at the moment. If you check at the beginning of the description, you can see me mentioning how I'm already falling behind on my intended work-output because I'm trying to get rid of my flu as quickly as possible :'I that work-output which is already being slowed down immensely, because I've not yet managed to get into the rhythm of getting myself to do at least a little bit of commission work after an 8-hour school day

My time management skills suck, so opening a "trade" bracket in my to-do list isn't a good idea right now :'0 (if I draw one trade, I can't really say no to the handful of trade-requests that usually follow when I post traded artwork,, so I preferably want to know for sure that I can squeeze in trade artwork long-term, not only as a one-time thing)
