Description To me, comic books these days feel like live service games. The characters feel like these strange, corporate profit centers which are constantly rebooted, refreshed, and remixed to keep a story that has been told a thousand times...fresh. They falsely kill off characters to manufacture outrage and bring them back in a couple months, and celebrate a strange culture of disrespecting customers. They position themselves as owners of ideas and concepts. They don't feel like characters and stories, they feel like "platforms" to provide an endless entertainment stream to consumers.

The live service game analogy is interesting, because I feel more and more these days that entertainment experiences are being engineered to consume more and more of our time. Why make a 2-hour movie when you could make a 12-part series to stream online and tell the same story but take much longer doing it? Why make a RPG with 20 hours of great game-play and story when we could get gamers grinding for months on digital slot machines? I am wary of 'more is better' because it is turning into 'more costs more' especially in time and money required to get 1 hour of quality enjoyment.

Enjoy my rant. It is relevant to the story because this series is born out of those frustrations, and you see those feelings come up from time to time in the narrative. Also, with Relay, there are hints that this world may have been suffering the same live service problem before the destruction, only taken to its logical and frightening end.

More costs more.

I wonder how close the operator is?

Drones today are operated from around the world. The US has one base in the continental states where they are flown everywhere, even on the opposite side of the planet. It is both creepy and amazing at the same time.

And at this point I am wondering if there even is an operator. Scary as that may be, they are developing fully autonomous drones these days. Panels 58 and 79 of the original series established the presence of automations and how spooky they are in this world.

But if the drones were autonomous, wouldn't Eli had noticed them before? She had spent alot of time in her life on the surface and was very alert to her surroundings. And why would they be around? If a majority of humanity was dead, then a drone would serve no real purpose. Shade said her group didn't use them.

So that leaves us with the operators of "The System." But again, why become active? Was it Relay's activation that brought Eli to their attention? To me, that makes sense, but with so few humans alive, why go on a search and destroy mission? And that leads to the drone itself. It's heavily armed, but is it for self defense?

Again, I have to wait to see what you do with the story. I'm glad Eli and Shade have a decent hearted creator.

We have not heard from Eli...yet. I went with Shade's perspective this entire sequence for two reasons: to build tension with Eli going missing, and to provide the more reader-focused exploratory point of view.

And yes, that is option #1, The System is reacting to a security threat presented by Relay's activation or some sort of Eli's subconscious hacking. Option #2 is this is not The System, and we have a new faction to worry about (because this clearly isn't Sanctuary).

There are options #3, #4, and #5/6. Armed and on a search and destroy mission, armed and on a peaceful scouting mission, and either of those and it needs to defend itself...versus something else. And those last options apply equally to both #1 or #2.

And as for the operators of The System? Relay said that was the M2CIP.CO corporation in panel #191, currently hiring. But...is anyone there still alive?

And thanks! I write these because these are the types of deep, make you think, forward-looking, layered stories with good characters I like to read. Great speculative fiction has all these "what ifs" that encourage you to...think and speculate.

I suspect that can't be good.
