Description Okay, so as promised, this is the sketch study for Kaizer Ghidorah. Kaijusamurai (Mr. Frank) hasn't done a Neo version yet so I decided to use the original concept art version, the suitified Shinsei, and Tyrantis's Remake to compare and evaluate the final villain of final wars.

It was fun while it lasted but the Shinsei era is officially dead. Any original monster they come up with just isn't cutting it and they've given the classics a showing already. It is decided by the higher ups to shove our favorite radioactive dinosaur into the closet for decade but not before giving him an exsplosive send off. Work on Final Wars begins. Within the recesses of the concept and development department, one crazy artist creates a monster that bends the laws of physics in ways that even Kaiju shouldn't be able to, its mere appearance an affront to sensibility. Yet this monster holds the heart of a classic in within its mind shatteringly complex chest. The concept for Kaizer Ghidorah is born. Standing taller than just about any monster before it, on legs that could not possibly hold its mighty girth, Kaizer Ghidorah is that elephant in the room that looks like its about to break its own legs and kill someone just by falling on them. A bizzare mixture of the newly christened Monster X and the mighty King of Terror himself, Kaizer Ghidorah is a good example of why incest in nature is wrong. Technically he should have collapsed on himself the second he came into being. I got to hand it to Toho though, he is a very INTERESTING monster. His skin is better here than it will be later but its still mind numbingly insane in its complexity. The bugger has no unity to its appearance, its skin is black and gold interlaced and melted together into something that looks like a dessert project gone horribly wrong. But at least you can tell what color is what. The wings are too small to function and probably aren't meant to be used anyway. Its tail is Monster X's tail but more colorful and longer; its probably just as effective as a weapon. The overall impression of this behemoth is that it is insanely tall. Biollante may have been big and wide, like a living mountain side; but Kaizer Ghidorah is built like a skycraper...on stilts... All that impressive height and weight is put onto hilariously humaniod legs that look like they could buckle and snap under him at any moment. A little fine tuning and obvious reworking on his lower anatomy would have brought this otherwise impressive addition to light. However it was not to be...as there is a golden rule in Toho: if its a monster, it must be suitified and if it can't be suitified, turn it into a puppet and pray that the viewers don't see the wires.

Concepts are done and was now time to build the suit that would be featured in the movie....what horrors would await the bedazzled people in the theaters... Its the climax of Final Wars, Godzilla and Monster X just finished their beam duel and Godzilla looks like he's ready to finish the demonic power ranger off; but X isn't done just yet. Pulling out the almighty power of Desus Ex Machina, X turns himself into King Ghidorah himself! -wait...thats not 'King' Ghidorah...Its that abomination we saw on the cutting floor, except now he's really been scarffing those twinkies and shoved himself into the oven for another four hours. The offical Shinsei version of Kaizer Ghidorah has arrived. Good. LORD. Apparently Toho decided that burnished gold stained with ink and cooked on high was better than swirling pudding and the occasional crunchy waffer. At least his legs look stable, and those knees look like they'd really hurt someone...providing he wasn't too busy trying keep himself upright. His tails are rather boring, no mace or spikes or nothing. There is no way in hell he can fly (though he will later heh heh heh). This is what happens when King Ghidorah gets laid off for years and then has to come back for a cameo, all those years of excess living in semi-retirement combined with barely any monster fights for almost a decade and we have this. A really big, really FAT, really wrinkled, cranky as hell Ghidorah that grew an extra pair of legs just so he could get on the freakin stage. Ghidorah gets a taste of semi victory when he whips Godzilla around like an abused step child and proceeds to suck the life force clean out of him. Luckily the plot was still on Godzilla's side as a Matrix style powerup got shoved up his ass just in time to avoid death by vampiric hicky. As per usual, Godzilla lays down the pain and makes Ghidorah decapitate himself before throwing his 50 million ton ass like a discus and kamehameha'ing (you can ignore it only so many times) his ass into orbit where he spontainously combusts. Now if only his corpse had done us the favor of landing on Minya before the move ended then it would have been a truly epic send off for Godzilla. No evil space dragon? No child support? No worries!

So now that brings us to the fans. Some were awed, some where angstying, some made fan art, some just laughed at the absurdity of it all. At the end of the day, we all had a good time as another era of Godzilla came to a close. Some of use decided to try our hand at the Godzilla universe to spend the time; and so another version was created. The Tyrantis version of Kaizer Ghidorah is much easier to stomach and uses a different concept for his execution. Instead of being a Monster X/Ghidorah hybrid (that was a complete eyesore) this Ghidorah is something of a semi tamed, organic weapon of mass destruction. The first thing you'll notice is that he has no black on him at all, which for something not decended from Monster X, is fine. Second thing you'll notice is that he has a well thought out, predatory build that makes that height and weight issue managable and sets it back to normal Kaiju standards. The heads are similar to the original Ghidorah concept with the moon crests. His Ghidorah also has a draconian beak and tusks which set it apart. Its wings are bigger and look a little more usable than the phyiscal shit stains the others had tacked on. It actually looks like he could aleast have a controled descent, hover, or longer jumps if he wanted to. The tails have their maces back and they look better for it. This version is more draconic than the other two, being that the other two really tried to impose that alien vibe on us at the cost of design integrity. The eyes have that sinister intelligence that Ghidorah can really work with and everything simply works like it should without the rest of us trying to figure out how the hell he can even move. The downsides to this design are that it has no connection to Monster X once so ever so it really doesn't have anything to set it apart from any other version of Ghidorah aside from the fact that it has hand wings and it has four legs. But hey, at least he doesn't make your eyes bleed or fume about yet another super monster that sits back and does nothing but fire lazers all damn day.

Overall the Concept version had a great idea but was too unstable and too complex. The Shinsei had a great head set up and knee detail but was fat, clunky, chunky and just fugly as hell. Tyrantis's version does away with the nonsense and gives us an idea of what a good four legged Ghidorah could look like. I'm not even sure Kaizer is so supposed to be flight worthy anyway but Tyrantis's version makes it seem at least plausible for Kaizer to glide, control his falls, or make even longer leaps. He doesn't have anything to do with Monster X so he's a bit generic and perhaps too draconic but he's a strong contender and he was alot easier to draw then those other two abominations. I'll probably make the Hybrid a crazy blend between the Tyrantis's body, the Concepts skin and sense of power, and the Shinsei's head arrangement and knee spikes. I'll probably do that tommorrow if I have time. Comments, critque, suggestions, have opinion, do send.

hmm, I actually thought about mixing my version with the original more while reading your post - considering my take on Monster 0X, it'd actually continue that interesting plot idea. I think you're on the right track (and I mean that in the most humble way possible) - mix the concept art and shinsei version with, well, realism and Ghidorahness.

The full body sketch of the Hybrid has a strong mix of just about everything I think. The Monster X connection is more easily seen and the body is alot more stable, a major pet peeve I had with both of the original versions. I think it might have enough realism, Ghidorahness and originality to make it.

Thats because he really is. At around 130 meters tall and weighing in around 210,000 tons, Kaizer (Keizer, however its spelled, blah) Ghidorah literally towers over Godzilla with Godzilla's head coming just over his chest as per usual. If he reared back on his back legs he'd be even taller.

Actually, Keizer Ghidorah is 140 meters big, 150 meters in length, and 100,000 tons. Ironic, because Biollante (from the movie she appeared in) is 120 meters big, but 200,000 tons.

That from Tohokingdom right? I can't remember where I got the earlier stats from but Biollante being heavier than him would make much more sense. I don't find it that ironic. Her girth is huge and while Keizer Ghidorah (or any Ghidorah for that matter) is a good amount of neck, Biollante's size is mostly about width and all the tendrils that lie just under the surface along with her massive torso/energy core.
