Description
According to my previous sketch study, about half us think Orga should just stay the way he is, the other half think some innovation wouldn't hurt. I think I should also make it clear that when I critique something, its only from my perception. For the record, Orga was not a very popular monster to begin with and its very apparent when you try to find material of him on the web. Apparently the Japanese thought he was missing something, who knows. When I look at Orga, or anything really, I try to remain as unbiased as possible and try to make a judgement based on what I've experienced. If I came out unfairly harsh regarding the suit's design, its because I believe it could have been better. So here's what we got.I have kept Orga as close to the original as I thought was reasonable. The Neo did a pretty good job body-wise so I based his body on that. The claw designs are a mix of original and Neo, he's got both huge arms back but with a twist. I've taken the powerful arm muscles of from the Tyrantis version and have them here but with the Neo's textures. This allows the hunched, simian posture and makes it a little easier to visualize him using his huge claws better. The extra eyes, spilt jaw, and tentacled tail are from the concept and they have functions. The extra eyes aid in his peripheral vision which is hamperd some what by his centered neck and huge shoulders. The main set are the binocular vision eyes up front which are the biggest. The smaller ones sense movement and little else. The mandible jaws can come together to create a stronger bite or split apart to gorge or make an intimidation display. It also allows a better discharge of venom. The tentacles on the end of his tail are whats left of his millenian heritage and help stabilize him when goes into a more upright stance by anchoring themselves into the ground. They also make a handy defensive weapon for things attacking from behind. Here are the all the little foot notes I out in the study:

Very Impressive Ren, I love how well you analyze these kaiju, It's really fascinating to see how deep you thought through all of this, especially this big hunk of a kaiju.

Thanks. When I was doing this sketch studies and hybrid designs it was a real effort to understand the characters and what made them tick. As making a design of something is much easier after you've come to understand it.

Ha ha! I could just imagine:
(Spacegodzilla traps Orga in a crystal prison, with only his head sticking out)
Orga: Don't you know who I am?
(A WTF look appears on SG's face)
Orga: I'M THE ORGANAUT, BITCH! (breaks free and starts going medieval on SG's ass)
Yes, I have an overactive imagination, but that's not such a bad thing, is it?

No, no it isn't. Especially when humor is involved . I'm seriously contemplating about drawing that scene. Maybe you should do it first though, since you came up with it and all

I think he looks great! He maintains that essential Orga-ness while having the extra spicy bits of all the other versions. I love how you incorporated all the versions in oh-so-subtlely: the mutated foot, the multiple eyes, and some of those big beefy forearms for good measure.

RenDragonClaw In reply to JacobSpencerKaiju79 [2008-10-09 23:38:48 +0000 UTC]
A little bit of Gregole's pragmatic opinion combined with my own difficult experiences drawing him have soured his image for me. I actually think he's a pretty cool monster, much in the same fashion I think Space Godzilla is a cool monster. Great concept, half-ass production, terrible use of material.
Kiryu is pretty much a robodragon Gary Stue of wanktastic power. While the 1st MG was brutally awesome, and the 2nd MG lacked personality, Kiryu somehow lost the concept of what he was supposed to be and ended up a draconic Evangelion instead. He literally curbstomped Godzilla not once but twice...it was a rather sad affair in retrospect.
Gregole can tell you his own reasons for hating Kiryu, the most obvious being his draconic face, though if you compare his face to the Godzilla he's fighting they do kinda match up. Perhaps its the horn or giant eyes or ear antennae...either way he apparently doesn't 'look' like he's got an actual Godzilla skull under that head. The Neo's head looks like a mailbox so its not much of an improvement. I'm still not happy with my idea. I'd probably make his head more obviously saurian if I tried him again. I seem to have bad luck with Mecha's no matter what kind I'm drawing.
So yeah, he's kind of a mockery to all things Gojiran and yet he's labeled the hero. The same story with Space Godzilla in the Heisei era except he was the villain. I have some pent up frustration in dealing with him and until I finally crack whatever artistic code is wrapped around his character I won't be looking at him too fondly.

I know this is an old post, but I have literally nothing else to do right now, so I may as well settle it.
My reasons for disliking Kiryu are less the whole dragon face(though I maintain that it looks really.... well... bad on him, dragon-hate-bells or no) and more the fact that he embodies every single cliche in fanmade monsters and fanboy-driven anime mecha ever conceived.
Ignoring that face - which I STILL feel is making fun of me - there's the fact that he's an angst-ridden machine driven by an angst-ridden pilot with a vendetta that isn't the least bit original.
His relationship with Godzilla basically amounts to angsty prettyboy versus emotionless punching bag.
He fills all the mecha/superhero cliches.
- Berserker mode: Check
- Various configurations: Check
- Unstoppable superweapon that takes a lot out of him: Check
- Disturbingly thin and lanky: Check
- Energy sword weapon: Check
- Lots of pointless little weapons that do nothing for the story or character: Check
- Hogs the entire goddamn storyline so he can angst and show off his moves: Check
- Flashy, new age, "X-TREME" design and powers: Check
- Ridiculously pretentious, overly serious story: Check
- Heroic death: Check
- Trench coat, absurdly long hair and oversized sword: Che...... Well, close enough!

That makes a lot of sense actually. I feel the same way on many of those points, though I never put as much thought into it. I just chocked it up to him being Gary-Stue of the Kaijuverse and left it at that. Kiryu is a blatant mockery and honestly, the ghost godzilla concept with out the mecha element would have probably done just fine and been much more interesting. Being that GMK came after Kiryu...that pretty much sums up the connection. Actually, sratch that. I say frankenzilla would be more appropriate. No, possessed spirit thats immediately visible, just mismatched carnage and body parts made to resemble Godzilla. Have THAT fight Godzilla, yeah.
They've always wanted to do a Godzilla vs. Godzilla fight, they just never got around to really doing it or making it feasible. GMK Goji and Kiryu are perhaps some key examples of Godzilla's concept taken in some sour directions. It can't be that hard to have two flesh and blood Godzilla's fight each other can it? Either way I think we can mostly agree that Kiryu, like Zilla before him, has been an embarassment to both his earlier MG's and Godzilla himself.
Its an old topic but worth talking about. I got nothing better to do really either...cursed computer and cursed weather keeping me from getting the parts to fix it...blast. Also, lol on the trench coat/sword/long hair cliche. You should draw that just to emphasize the point...then have Rygama trash him or something. Possible 'I Hate' deviation in the future?

Well, that might be a little overboard - dragons and wolves are prettymuch the single most mind-scarring cliches for me. But I am planning on making fun of the whole "Japanese weapons are better" and "Katanas can cut through a tank! Really! I saw it on the internet somewhere" thing by having Enemene-Oni's various Japanese weapons continually snap against Rygama's hide or just bounce off - up until she bring in the greataxe.

RenDragonClaw In reply to GREGOLE [2008-12-18 22:00:09 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, katanas are made for slicing, not being sliced. One good solid hit to the side of one of those and it will shatter. Its that principle that makes Sephiroth even more rediclous. Big super long katana? Even more likely to get snapped in half. A katana might be able to cut 'arts' of a tank but it would be dull as shit afterward and theres no way in hell it would be able to take the whole tank down.
As far as I know concerning asian weaponry a Tetsubo or great club, is the only weapon with enough sheer girth to really do a shit load of damage. All the other weapons of their's rely on speed and effeciency to be effective. Against a heavily armored kaiju like Rygama, normal blades would probably snap like twigs sure as hell-is-on-fire. Axes are a good mix between clubs and swords with the weight of a club and the cleaving edge of a blade to focus the weight.
Sounds like a good fight to witness .

Well, Kiryu does mean "machine dragon", so the draconic face should be there.
I'm not Gregole, I do like dragons. Well, at least, the savage intelligent animal types anyway.
I'm surprised he doesn't like Monsturra, since he is essentially a dragon.

There's probably enough saurian kaiju-esque build to him that Gregole doesn't care all that much and it doesn't set off the hate bells in his head. I never understood his extreme irritation regarding them really. It seems like he feels that dragons are these self important demigod Mary Sues that are structured like glass cannons. They can blast you to pieces but they'll snap in half if you get in their face. He probably had a bad experience with the dragon loving community and it just went down hill from there.
I personally cringe when I see what I refer to as 'The Final Fantasy Dragon'. Its almost biomechanical in terms of armor and it almost always has this slip of a back that you swear a decent bull rush could break with little effort. Just look at most incarnations of Bahamut and other popular dragon types around DA and you'll see what I mean.
When I very first saw Kiryu I had no problem with his face once so ever. Gregole advised me that it was his face that appeared draconic and thus was his one of his many failings as he's supposed to have a Godzilla skull build which his narrow snout did not suggest. I have a hard time distinguishing 'dragon face' and 'dinosaur face' as the two co-mingle and merge so often that mish-mash creatures like kaiju become almost impossible to tell one from the other. I mean hell, Godzilla himself has asian dragon whisker pads minus the whiskers and his eyes are above his snout much like tradtional dragons. Its kinda getting to the point where the 'its draconic' arguement is becoming just a tad silly from my perspective. I can't really help it if what I draw looks like a dragon as I've spent years drawing the damn things over dinosaurs.
Oh well, you live and learn I guess.

I think this is a very reasonable way to keep with his roots and theme, while allowing some innovation and fine-tailoring.
Were it not for the lack of the classic simian gait, I'd love the Neo version. I think the incorporation of Neo features here works rather well.
As for Orga's lack of popularity........ Well........ Dude. Spacegodilla and Kiryu are two of the most popular monsters Toho has rolled out, despite the fact that they were also the sloppiest beasties since everyone's favorite flesh-eating shag-carpet.
Honestly, popularity is bollocks. Sure, I wouldn't mind playing around with Orga a little, but the guy we got was a refreshing and unusual character.
What I would do would be play with assymmetry. Keep the simian gait, but warp the details here and there to keep with the out of control mutant thing.

I don't think I'll ever understand how the popularity thing works, though in my marketing class I might eventually learn it. I liked Spacegodzilla and Kiryu when I first saw them, it wasn't until after I looked at the mechanics behind them did I start to see how shallow they were. It just goes to show you that as long as its flashy and blows up then it will get people's attention.
I liked Orga as is for the most part, which is what I did here. Its just hard to find some good pics that get those amazing details and remind me of why I liked him in the first place. I'll concede the issue regarding his overall design, he's just one of those kaiju that already have something going for him, just needs a little polish.
Your version of Orga sounds cool, I'd like to see it sometime.
