So this is Varan everyone. This would be my second attempt at drawing the critter as the first pose I tried wasn't working. He's got aspects of both ~GodzillaSamurai 's Neo version and the original. I liked the Neo's coloring so I kept it for the most part. The wing flaps are yellow since almost everyone else makes theirs yellow. I think his arms turned out too beefy but it works out in the end I guess. He's sitting here in his natural element, a rocky peak high in the sky. Not much more to say, I could say stuff about what abilities I think he could have had but I'll bother with that in a full fledged redesign; if I feel like it.Varan's humor quote is the opening tune from the classic 'Batman and Robin' show. When you think about it, Varan fits the caped crusader rather well. He's always hiding, he glides yet doesn't really fly, he's nimble and athletic and he has a strong sense of vengeance that puts him at odds with authorities. His color scheme (here) is a tad bright but when your that damn huge, most people aren't going to care what color your scales are. Or I could have really blown it this time, oh well. Let me know what you think.

Wait a minute, where did you get Spacegodzilla as Mr. Freeze?

Remember how Mr. Freeze had a thing for diamonds, suspended animation, perserving things and ruining people's happiness so they could be as miserable as he was since he lost his wife?
Spacegodzilla comes from the coldest depths of space, he makes giant crystals pop out of nowhere and he was rumored to be very intelligent. I think he fits the towering, powerful, cynical, yet brillant Mr. Freeze better than Gezora who is not really all that powerful and Gezora was actually a minion for Yog while Mr. Freeze has always done his own thing. Spacegodzilla also has the red eyes, another key aspect of Mr. Freeze's persona. I actually think that a reimagined Spacegodzilla would make better sense with ice powers rather than outright psychic abilities.

I can imagine it now:
Gezora shall play the role of Mr. Freeze (he's the closest wew got to a kaiju that uses cold as a weapon).
Biolllante shall play the role of poison ivy (maybe if she worked the tredmill a bit).
Godzilla shall be killer croc (they actually look alike and have simalar abilites).
King Kong shall be bane (He's the physically strongest Earth kaiju if I'm not mistaken).

Well...Godzilla eats missiles on occasion so I suppose its one of those kaiju initation rites. Every kaiju has to do one and Varan's was probably eating a bomb for the lulz.
It would also be interesting to see him float up behind enemies from behind and drop on them. Then he really would be like Batman.

You know, now that I think about it, there is something about Varan's personality and design that screams Adam West to me. They both ooze that ridiculously stupid yet somehow awesome air.
I like the coloration. I first saw Varan as a black and white drawing in the Official Godzilla Compedium and had no idea what his real colors were for years. The Varan I imagined in my head was more a bit more colorful than the mundane brown version in the movies, so your take fits that mental image of mine a tad more than the movie's did.

I like the brighter coloring too. Winged creatures generally are more colorful and Varan is often alluded to having poison, anticoagulating saliva or something similar; that being the case, having bright warning colors would give those powerful natural weapons more credibility.

Its not really Komunga I get freaked out over its the reference material I'm going to have to dig up. Actual photos of spiders close up give me uncomfortable tingly sensations. I was bitten alot as a little kid. Fantasy spiders are okay, they deviate from reality enough to the point that they don't do that to me. Its not a full blown phobia, they just make me nervous and uncomfortable.

Neo-Varan was another favorite of mine. I didn't mind the coloration, and I like the thecodont/reptoid appeal this one has. I also like the incorporation of the backward swept jaw spines WITHOUT making it look like a dragon and making fangirls who know nothing about the genre fall in love with it and oogle it was some sort of charismatic gary stu of a dragon-character, then look into the franchise with interest and look down their nose in disgust at it and defame a likeable character for not fitting into their extremely narrow and brutally cliche interests, and where was I going with this? ...
Regardless, I see your point in an eerie way. Add to it, GU Varan clearly knows kung fu. XP

So anyway, thanks man. I was mildly wondering if his look turned draconic or not. I've been trying to curb that habit lately since most reptilian kaiju are saurian based. And he certianly does know kung fu

I think its the meatyness of the arms and the crouched position. He looks rather ferocious there. Kinda wish he'd been more active in that fight against Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters.
