Legend of The No-Face Doll

The Iroquois people (this is a group of tribes in the northeastern US) have what they call the three sisters, the "sustainers of life". These sisters are called Corn, Beans, and Squash.

Corn Spirit was so happy that she was one of the sustainers of life that she decided she wanted to do something special for the people. So the Creator made a doll for her from her husks, which he gave a very beautiful face. The doll was then sent it to Iroquois children to play with, and to make them happy.

The doll traveled from village to village playing with the children and doing whatever she could to make them happy.

Everywhere she went, people would tell her how beautiful she was until, after awhile, she became extremely vain.

When the Creator noticed this, he spoke to her and explained that this was not the right kind of behaviour. She agreed not to be this way anymore. The Creator also told her that if she continued he would punish her but he did not say how he would do it.

She agreed not to act that way again, and things continued on as before.

Then one day she was walking by a creek and she glanced into the water. As she admired herself, she couldn't help thinking about how beautiful she was, because she really was very beautiful.

The Creator saw this and sent a giant screech owl out of the sky and it snatched her reflection from the water. So, when she looked again she had no reflection. This was the punishment the Creator gave her.

In the Mohawk tradition, when a mother makes or gives a doll to her child, she tells them this legend. This is to remind children that it is wrong to think they are better then any one else.

I am happy for all the kids who hear this story! She is really a hero that grows through her experiences.

The creator..monumental question. I always have time for these!

The creator of humans, from a version of our creation story that I am familiar with, is a twin. He is the twin that represents a straight arrow, and he makes all the things in the world that make life easy for humans. His twin is represented by a crooked arrow, and he makes all the things that make life challenging and test the resolve-strength and I'd say "ability to co-operate" of humanity. Together, they both create human bodies out of clay, but the straight arrow twin is the only one that could breathe life into the figures. I have always imagined them as they were represented from artists illustrations: men. One with long combed hair, standing tall and the other with unruly hair, kinda sneaky and crouched over, both strong though. They create humans, but the creator of this dimension/world is kinda their grandmother..another long story. lol

Do you have the no-face doll? I heard that girls get it as a gift from mother but maybe it just an old tradition.

I love the interpretation of Creator with an arrow. In fact, I didn't not hear about this representation. If speaks about the concept of my art the great arrow is symbolise the Creator as well but he does not have a single image because in my opinion Creator have million faces.

thanks for your thoughts about this interesting topic

I do have a cornhusk doll. It wasn't from my mother though. I just bought it to wager in a game, and won it back. Thank you also for your interpretation.

There is a version where all that you have just written is only the beginning of said dolls epic journey in which she seeks the maker of all things in order to win faces back for all the corn husk dolls of the world. Its a beautiful beautiful story full of courage and hope. I actually have been illustrating the other chapters along with other artists to promote the longer version and lesson in the legend.

Nice art by the way.

Thanks for the useful information, it sounds interesting and great! Honestly, I'm not surprised because great legends must have a good final. I hope she met the Creator and got back all the faces

Yes and yes. She meets him and gets the faces back, but not from asking him. He sends her back to earth to continue her journey, its only when she gives up and becomes thankful and content with what she has that she wins the faces back.

Interesting story and a great interpretation I think. It makes me wonder what those keys dangling from the other claw might be... talismans, perhaps, maybe even the keys to restoring her lost reflection? Really like the alien-head decorations on her bracelets, a very cool and bizarre addition Really imaginative and wonderful as always!

The key is a very strange symbol here, I really don't know- what is it?, maybe the element of Enigma This story very inspired my imagination, I love the similar legends with a great sense! Thanks a lot for the cool comment
