Description First portrait this year, the hidden side of this awesome young artist [link] I discovered on tumblr via EatSleepDraw [link] .

She posted:

"I’ve always wanted to have another artist draw me. When I sketch someone, even someone I don’t know, I really try to see them. I’ve always wanted to know how another artist sees me. I think it’s curious and sort of beautiful to see yourself from someone else’s perspective."

This is my take. A happy person on the outside, but full of complex emotions on the inside. I chose to paint this side of her, because although it looks a bit distant, lost in thoughts, I find it strong and mysterious and interesting.

But then again, a painting is the projection of the artist so it might tell more about my feelings than hers.

Beautiful coloring! I love how you contrasted the orange and purple.

Yeah, I have a feeling these will be easy to do in the future. But I'm taking a break from painting for a while so, we'll see ...

This is awesome! I like how it's not "exact" or "particular" with the lines, but still conveys the emotions really well and looks amazing. I need to work on that with my own art.

I think that comes from the traditional look. I took a class in the summer, tried pastels, watercolors and oils for the first time. I started using colors and developing a traditional look in digital as well. It all really fell in place when I bought ArtRage. This software is just so much fun to use.

I always tend to try and make my art as photo-like as possible, but I should really try the other direction as well. It's very nifty looking. I've never taken an art class, I really should to try out a bunch of things.

Yeah, go for it! You have very good technique already, so it should be fun for you. Looking forward to it.

Awesome work!
I don't suppose you could tell me briefly about your process with ArtRage - what brushes do you tend to use? what canvas texture? do you work on multiple layers?
I'm so used to Photoshop it's a bit difficult for me to adjust my brain to a new program! haha!
This piece is really great though! I love it

I started this one in ArtRage for iPad so it was a bit tough with no pressure sensitivity. All the tools work the same though. In the final stages I switched to my mac to finish easier.

I start by picking out colors I like and add them to samples. Then I paint in the background with the roller - full & thick preset I think. Just having fun with mixing colors.

I do go on a new layer at first, but will merge down when I have my shape in place, because paints interact different when everything is in one layer - you get nice color mixing that I'm fond of. I paint exclusively with normal round preset in oils. I also shape things and mix colors with the palette knife, just blend colors and also wet smudge for the skin.

Oh, and canvas is just default canvas.

But just go have fun and make some quick pieces with different tools. I think you saw me experiment with watercolors, markers, etc.

Other than that I'm very new to it myself. Just learning by discovering so far.

Oh that's awesome! Thanks mate!
For my first one I played with the oil brush mostly, did a little bit of palette knife scraping, and then did some lines with the ink pen (which was really quick and fun to use).

Will definitely be doing some quick test pieces over the next few days
Thanks so much for the tips!
