This is my entry for ^cosmosue 's contest [link] . It's of Elric of MelnibonΓ©, a character created by Michael Moorcock. For those of you who don't know the story, here is a very brief synopsis:Elric is an albino "anti-hero" in a series of stories by Michael Moorcock. He's a Sorcerer but he's physically weak due to inbreeding of the MelnibonΓ©an royalty. His strength is sustained by a magic black sword that eats people's souls and transfers their energy to him. He hates the sword but needs it to complete various "quests".

I ended up doing a lot of hand painting on this one. I only had three stock images that I used - the figure, the sword and the ship. The ship had the least modification.

A person could almost see him as the original template, behind the ideas for characters such as Sephiroth from the Final Fantasy series of games/films when he was first introduced, couldn't we?

Definitely. It's only upon seeing Elric again that I'm reminded of the similarities. If you ever get the chance, look up videos for Final Fantasy 7, or watch someone play it, and you'll see certain things you might recognise.
Though story-wise Sephiroth goes the other way, towards chaos and destruction, though it's still to end the world and all that Elric stuff, but you'll see him and a little light should come on. lol

Aaaaaaaargh what a awesome picture.
I think you point Elrics emotions up with this pose. The gaze seemes between hate and despair and thats are two characteristics which are quentessentially of Elric.
I love it, I really love this picture...

Thanks! I had to hunt down pictures of real albinos to get a sense of how to paint the eyes. That was one of the tricky parts, so I'm glad you like them.

For the whole piece?
Well, there was this contest - with the theme of Fantasy in Literature. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at first, but then I asked myself who my favorite Fantasy character was, and of course I came up with Elric... I'm not sure why I decided I wanted to do the ship scene, but the Sailor on the Seas of Fate has always been a strong image for me. With the ship and the mist, and all that...
After that, it was a matter of finding stock and seeing how close I could come to what I wanted. In the end I had to repaint most of the figure to get it the way I envisioned it. So the exact layout was dictated in part by the ship and figure stock that I found. But it came pretty close to what I had in mind.
Well, that probably doesn't really answer your question, since I glossed over the part about how I thought of doing the picture on the ship... It was just one of those "eureka" moments, I suppose. I hope this explanation helps.
