Description This is a digital painting that I worked on for several months - I didn't post it for a while because was hung up on creating just the right background... I finally took Sue's (`cosmosue ) advice and made it simple and kind of misty. Many photo's were used as references for this, but there is no photomanipulation in this piece!

Specifically, I used this image by *lockstock for much of the face, neck and torso: [link]
My wife modeled for the hands and arms and I used too many references for the hair to list (including someone that I saw at a local restaurant! )
The main reference I used for the lamp was by ~ArchAngelsPoison : [link] - used mostly to get the general shape and a sense of the shading.

The cuffs, lightning, smoke, and background were conjured from my own imagination with no references.

Created completely in Photoshop CS2 using a Wacom Intuos3 graphics tablet. All brushes were default Photoshop issue.

Thank you!

I just wish I could do a piece like this more quickly - this one took weeks...
(and I still see all the problems with it when I look at it... maybe I'm too critical of my own work, though)

Very well done I wouldn't be able to do that without using references! It's lovely, and keeping the BG plain was a good idea you followed!

Thank you! I actually did use references - several of them, in fact. There's no way I could have done this without something to look at...
Thanks for the encouragement.

Wow! that's utterly amazing artwork. Hmm, advanced critique... Well, the lightning/engery could do with a hint of colour other than white, blue for instance. But you got the face perfect

"the lightning/engery could do with a hint of colour other than white, blue for instance."
Funny you should say that - I was just thinking last night about adding some blue into the lightning
(I was watching one of those plasma balls, which I'll probably end up using as a reference )

Thank you for the comment/critique, and also for the !

I see that an advanced critique is welcome, so here I go:
I think the background still needs work. Are those mountains? The ground just kind of 'turns into' the mountains. The mountains don't really start anywhere; it doesn't really make sense. I think you should look at references of landscapes.
You need to add different colours to her skin. She looks very flat. Perhaps some purple from the sky, or some gold from her bands. The same goes for the sky and ground. Tie the picture together with the same colour scheme.
I would also work on her hair. It's too perfect and doesn't look real. You should add in a few strands and highlights.
Your light source is confused. Is it behind her or in front of her? It looks like you have it coming from two different directions. Finally, the lamp doesn't look like it's on the ground. I would darken the shadow just underneath it.
Good luck. She has nice form, and it's a good idea, and it could turn into something great.

Thank you! I've been hoping for a good critique on this piece! This is extremely helpful!

I have to admit that I punted on the background - this was the fourth one I tried and I was getting frustrated with it, so I didn't give it the attention it deserved. It's been long enough now, though, that I think it's time to go back and fix it. I'm actually not that happy with the colors that I used in it, either. You suggest having a unifying color scheme (great suggestion), and I'm wondering if I should have the background fit more with the colors in the figure rather than inflict the figure with the colors of this background (specifically the purple). I was originally planning a desert/sand background - I may try that one again.

I'll take your other observations into account when I address the background.

Again, thank you for taking the time to give me such great feedback on this piece - I've been frustrated that it wasn't better than it is, but couldn't quite put my finger on why.

The interesting thing is that the working title for this one was "Freedom". But when I got close to finishing, it occurred to me that the picture could be interpreted as being either a djinni gaining her freedom, or a new djinni being created! So I changed the title to allow the viewer to decide which it was.

Thank you!
