Description This is my entry for ^cosmosue 's contest [link] . It's of Elric of MelnibonΓ©, a character created by Michael Moorcock. For those of you who don't know the story, here is a very brief synopsis:

Elric is an albino "anti-hero" in a series of stories by Michael Moorcock. He's a Sorcerer but he's physically weak due to inbreeding of the MelnibonΓ©an royalty. His strength is sustained by a magic black sword that eats people's souls and transfers their energy to him. He hates the sword but needs it to complete various "quests".

For anyone who wants to know more, I ran across this great website:

I ended up doing a lot of hand painting on this one. I only had three stock images that I used - the figure, the sword and the ship. The ship had the least modification.

I thought it was runes at first but it doesn't look like runes now I've looked them up. My husband suggested Tolkein's elven, but they look like runes not this.
My brother was a great fan of Moorcock, and my eldest daughter has the Elric saga.
I think it's a cool picture.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it.

You're getting close with the sword - although I'm not sure I'm ultimately going to stick with this character set... It really isn't Moorcockian. I'll have to decide before I offer it as a print, though. If you know of a font that's made up of more rune-like characters, I'd love to hear about it!

I'm determined to figure it out!
So far it looks most like an Old Italic script, possibly Oscan or Umbrian. Is the first word breath? I am reading from the tip up - is that right? I am finding it hard, even with full view and wearing my glasses, to make out some of the letters, especially where the smoke is. Any chance of assistance?

Ok, it reads from the hilt down. It's one word that's integral to the story. Major Hint: Your husband is on the right track, but it isn't elven.

It says "Stormbringer" and "Soul Stealer" in Elder Futhark (Norse) runes.

Oops, I think I phrased my question wrong. I was wondering if you could translate "Stormbringer Soul Stealer" into, say, Old Norse. I've always felt a bit weird having the inscription be in Norse runes but the words in English.

Well, I'll probably tell since I'm about to post an edit with a different font (actual runes this time).
If you still want to figure it out, you may want to save a copy of the existing version. (but be quick! )

Your welcome, I really love how it turned out! I showed my husband and he thought it was awesome too! (he knows the stories behind the character I don't lol)

Yay! Someone who knows the character! I was beginning to wonder if I would find anyone.
It's also good to know that someone who knows the character likes it, too. Does he have a guess
for what's on the sword? The alphabet it's in will be a little harder - it doesn't really have any direct
relation to the series. (Yikes! A hint! )

I will ask him about the sword but I dont think he knows THAT much lol

RetroZombie In reply to cosmosue [2005-10-03 04:36:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, if he probably knows the name of the sword - that was pretty significant.

Oops! Another hint!!

This is amazing work. The way you were able to combine the pictures and make them look as one is inspiring.

I am not sure of the exact language, but I looks like it came from early Phoenician, or a language soon after like maybe greek? lol, I don't know.

You know the rest of my comments already

Good luck in the contest! I'm sure you'll do good!

I seriously have no idea what the sword says

Thanks! And thanks again for the early review!

Well, I would give you a hint, but that wouldn't be fair.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Anoya In reply to RetroZombie [2005-09-28 20:15:51 +0000 UTC]

That indeed wouldn't be fair, so no need to
I'll just wait till the mystery will be errr.. resolved is the right word, right?

Welcome!

RetroZombie In reply to Anoya [2005-09-28 20:27:15 +0000 UTC]

"resolved" works, but I think you were looking for "solved". That one is most often used when talking about a mystery.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Anoya In reply to RetroZombie [2005-09-29 06:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I just added two letters to the word. 'Solved' is indeed a better word
