Description This is my entry for ^cosmosue 's contest [link] . It's of Elric of MelnibonΓ©, a character created by Michael Moorcock. For those of you who don't know the story, here is a very brief synopsis:

Elric is an albino "anti-hero" in a series of stories by Michael Moorcock. He's a Sorcerer but he's physically weak due to inbreeding of the MelnibonΓ©an royalty. His strength is sustained by a magic black sword that eats people's souls and transfers their energy to him. He hates the sword but needs it to complete various "quests".

For anyone who wants to know more, I ran across this great website:
[link]

I ended up doing a lot of hand painting on this one. I only had three stock images that I used - the figure, the sword and the ship. The ship had the least modification.

Very very cool. I like the modernish look of him, and the pose, leaning against Stormbringer. It says all right there really.

Love it

Elric. Oh you pulled him off so well. And the sword. You pulled off the sword so well. Just thought I'd mention that, or it might kill me. Or it might kill me because I forgot its name.

Yep, you can't slight Stormbringer, or he'll wreak his revenge! ( don't worry, I won't tell him you forgot his name! )

And thank you for the great comment.

Oi, this is amazing...I've been staring at your picture for probably a good ten minutes...and it just now hit me that there isn't all that much color, and yet! it's amazing shading and shadows give it such depth, making the redness of the character's eyes intense beyond reason...oi, again, this is awesome
and please forgive me if this is a retarded question, and I missed it, but what program did you use for this? I am really a beginning artist, and am wondering what some other artists use...have been hearing pretty good feedback about Photoshop, but I thought I would still ask around...and it's Worth It if I can find out how to create pieces like this!!! Wonderfully done!

Ohhhh dear... Young Monarch, there he is..! In the very flesh, one can almost say.

Though not in very fresh memory concerning plot details, those books rocked my world back when I started reading fantasy.

Wonderful job, the expression is intense but the pose suggests something fragile.... and the atmosphere is like electric currents mainlined into the spinal chord. ^_^ I like this, indeed!

PlagueBearerBJD [2005-11-05 03:00:38 +0000 UTC]

all i have to say is this is amazing. its a lot better picture of elric than is on the first addition books. but than again that was another time a different style. the image i also had of elric was less huge muscles and more sleek and trim...alot like in this picture you made. its amazing.

ps. kick ass choice of character to do.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RetroZombie In reply to PlagueBearerBJD [2005-11-05 05:19:07 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Thank you! I'm so glad that you appreciate it. I specifically made him less muscular - he could barely stand without magic, for Pete's sake! I don't know if you looked at the original stock I used for the figure - the picture was of a girl. I had to actually "beef up" the picture to get him even to that point (especially the arms). The face was completely restructured.

When the contest category came out as "Fantasy in Literature" I knew exactly who I needed to do!

PlagueBearerBJD In reply to RetroZombie [2005-11-05 18:35:37 +0000 UTC]

oh i know...the pictures from the old book covers were...strangly..frightening..i guess i don't tend to like the conan figured men. but yeah they never described him as this huge beefy guy. so i love your verstion the best. and yeah i did look at it. lol looks amazing

Wow awesome It's so rare to see good Elric fanart. I'm impressed with how well you manipulated the figure. The only qualm i have is the skull on the sword - however i know you have to work what you've got so it's no biggy. I just never imagined Stormbringer to have a big 'ol skull on the hilt Really great work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RetroZombie In reply to DelightfulDes [2005-10-29 02:01:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the skull bothers me, too. I wasn't comfortable with completely changing the sword at the time, but I may come back to it after I finish my current project. (I'm doing a digital painting from scratch, so I should be able to tackle a sword after that! )

Thank you for the great comment - it's great to hear from Elric fans!

How interesting... Did you notice the flame on the sword, just below the hilt? It bears a striking resemblance to your avatar! That's just too cool!

DaniMyrick In reply to RetroZombie [2005-10-24 04:34:53 +0000 UTC]

I didn't even notice. I think the flame shape I used in my avatar was in my default preset shapes in Photoshop.

Oh well - I'm going to try to get a letter off to M.M. this weekend and see what he says.

I also think it is your best so far because it seems to gel really well and it has fantastic atmosphere. Of all your pics I like this one the most.

RetroZombie In reply to Twilights-Child [2005-10-13 19:10:43 +0000 UTC]

Oh, M.M. is Michael Moorcock - the author who created the Elric character and who owns the copyright.

Yeah, I think I may be getting a handle on this whole composition concept. I'm really glad you like it.

Oooooo Elric! I love this character and you nailed it. From the body language and the way he's holding the sword. the runes are the sword look great Classic furthark maybe? I'd try to decipher it but I'm too lazy

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RetroZombie In reply to gracelessone [2005-10-13 16:54:23 +0000 UTC]

Yay! An Elric fan! I was wondering if there were any others left out there - you'd be surprised how many people never heard of him! This is a great comment, especially coming from someone who knows the character - I've been very interested in getting opinions on how well I captured him. Thanks!

I went through several rune fonts for Stormbringer - the one currently displayed is Cirth Erebor (a Tolkien Dwarfish font). If I ever get permission from M.M. to sell the print, I think I'll switch to my Elder Futhark version since there are copyright issues with using a Tolkien font in a commercial work (I have that version on my hard disk ready to go ). It just says "Stormbringer Soulstealer", as you might expect.
