DEMOCRACY FOR BEGINNERS -- On Sale February 10, 2009 (Available for Pre-Order)[link]
With all the talk about “democracy” these days, it’s surprising how little time is spent concentrating on the very idea of democracy itself – the history of this political institution and the justification for it as a political institution. Democracy For Beginners looks at the history and concept of democracy as well as some challenges that democracy faces today.
Beginning with the rise of Democracy in 5th Century Athens and ending with the future of democracy with the notion of “e-democracy” and the possibility of democratic practice across national boundaries via the internet, Democracy For Beginners traces the evolution of democracy as a political concept and address some of its main critics (from Plato to contemporary social choice theory).
Democracy For Beginners is the perfect introduction to the foundation on which our country stands.

As far as I can tell it's one big evolving experiment.

Interesting blog. It's taken a long time to respond to your comment because I wanted to make sure I took the time to read your blog as well as all accompanying comments. This is an argument as old as the idea itself and while variations have been tried, to date I think it's safe to say that no major form of government has gotten it right. Hence the allusion in my other posts to a "grand experiment." Thanks for the read.

Very interesting sounding book. Hooray for your interest and contriubution!
I agree with that comment above, too: I think a lot of 'democratic' nations needs to really re-examine what that means- and whether it really is the best system for that particular country. I've worked on and off with Elections Canada for the past five years, being one of those folks at the polling booth who hands you the ballot, explains it and tallies them at the end of the night. It never fails to appall me how uninformed and apathetic most people are when it comes to voting. And my personal beef: seperation of church and state is great but I think even more important should be seperation of BUSINESS and state. Corporate sponsorship and the ability to buy a senator/congressman/MP/what-have-you is the antithesis of democracy.
Another GREAT illustration by you and a thought-provoking book to look forward to!

I absolutely agree with the lack of knowledge on behalf of the public and the need for a separation of business and government - unfortunately this has been a path we've allowed ourselves to be lead down for way too long. Regardless of party affiliation, I hope this election stirs the pot and gets a whole new generation interested in the workings of government. Apathy is the enemy of any successful popular regime be it democratic of other.
Thanks for stopping by!

don't you mean "democracy for dummies"? amerikkkans need to be schooled again on the concept without corporate sponsorship.

I agree - which is one of the reasons I decided to get involved with this project. Democracy has become very much a thing we only think about once every four years but in truth the concept should extend throughout our lives and inform the way we live on a more quotidian level. I hope that in reading this book people realize that voting is only an end product of the democratic process. It's in the representation and deliberation of issues that the real genius is apparent.

yeah. direct action seems to be a thing of the past, esp. with the patriot act in effect like it is. i don't know what our current president's gonna do with that but we'll see.........that's the last thing we need is no rights and no freedom, we already got no money!
