Description
Part of a series of paintings that deconstruct the narrative process. Having always been interested in storytelling, I decided to examine the very nature of how and why we tell stories. Each image in this series illustrates a different aspect/structural element of narrative. The images focus on concepts such as conflict, resolution, the idea of the status quo, the hero's transformation and the eternal return. The protagonist is just that, the very embodiment of the "hero" - his suit, a modern representative of a knights armor also doubles as the "burden only he can wear."I had a lot of fun on this series. They are all watercolor, with the exception of "The Guide" which is oil on gessoed paper. Each image is 22x30 inches (56x76 cm).

Looove the perspective and composition of this one! This has such a classic feel to it, like a Leyendecker painting or something.
I'm so glad this oil - before I read your comment, I thought it was watercolor, as is everything you do. I was thinking, "Man, this one REALLY looks like oil! I AM SO JEALOUS" haha! Well, shit, I'm still jealous. But anyway. You've got an excellent hand at oils, as well.

Thank you! I think one day I'll return to oils but for right now I'm just having way too much fun with watercolors. Little fun trivia fact: this is actually the LAST oil painting I did. AND it wasn't even considered finished in my eyes.
By the way, Leyendecker = serious bad ass.

I don't know what I like more about this painting: the colour scheme, the poses, their expressions or his tie, hehe.

Oh wonderful, this painting hasn't gotten any love in such a long time. I'm glad there is enough going on in the painting to keep you wonder what you like best. For me it's all about that little peak of her white shoe. That's my favorite part!

I really like these pieces and I do believe that it is because you are searching into the process of narrative. At my school anything close to being too narrative is too ullustration which I hate. I love these paintings. The colors are so vibrant and I love the distorted perspective. These pieces are reall y stronge and I hope to see more.

I've struggled with the label of "illustration" as well. While I do consider illustration part of what I do (just take a look at my newest deviations and my comics!) It's not ALL I do. There was a time in American art - and in all art historically - that it told stories. The idea that art can't tell a story and has to be about something different all together is a relatively new concept in the scheme of things. So go ahead - stay strong and do what you love. While everyone else is trying to figure out where they are headed, you'll already be at the destination.

Thank you. I love doing things that are illustration and fine art. I enjoy both and I just wish I could do some more illustration at my school because they are just fine art. I love doing fine art don't get me wrong but every so often I just love to sit down and do illustration. I don't have to think up any type of artists statement that dives into the depths of my soul for illustration. I also write my very own stories and I would always love to do illustrations for my own stories. I wouldn't think that anyone would mind but I would not get a good grade in the class. Thank you for the pep talk though It has made me feel so much better.

Well just stick to what is in your heart. If your heart tells you to illustrate your stories then go for it! Even if you cannot do it in school, you will be able to do whatever you want once you graduate. Maybe then you'll do both! Keep up the good work and never let hold you back!

I really like this angle here and their reactions to one another. It's fantastic. Lots of emotion and attitude and character riddle in there that can be picked apart just by staring at it.
