Description Part of a series of paintings that deconstruct the narrative process. Having always been interested in storytelling, I decided to examine the very nature of how and why we tell stories. Each image in this series illustrates a different aspect/structural element of narrative. The images focus on concepts such as conflict, resolution, the idea of the status quo, the hero's transformation and the eternal return. The protagonist is just that, the very embodiment of the "hero" - his suit, a modern representative of a knights armor also doubles as the "burden only he can wear."

I had a lot of fun on this series. They are all watercolor, with the exception of "The Guide" which is oil on gessoed paper. Each image is 22x30 inches (56x76 cm).

I like the detail. It looks photo like for painting this. The faces seem real. Good use of lighting.

Both actually. This painting originally went by a different title - The Dance - the movement, or rather the metaphor of the dance was to indicate the harmonious relationship between the two concepts the characters are meant to illustrate: The Guide (the woman) and the Hero (the man). The idea being that for the hero to accomplish his task, he must first acquire some new knowledge that will in turn change him, and in being changed, he can complete his task... I can go into the mechanics of it much much more but I won't bore you with than just yet. Maybe I'll be a breakdown of each painting and put it in the description box above.

Thank you very much. it was interesting trying to shoot the reference for this one, especially considering that I modeled for protagonist in each one.

This one has a special place in my heart... it's also probably the only oil you'll be seeing here on DA. It's a bit unfinished for my usual oils - I was trying to be more gestural and not harp on the details with this series - but there's something about it that has always made me smile.

i think the unfinished approach does it a lot of good. it reminds me of digital with the smooth fast strokes. i'm glad you enjoy your work, i find a lot of artists are extremely down on their stuff. when the artist enjoys there work, it makes it better for me too.

If I don't enjoy my work it shows. I'm someone that can't make art when I'm feeling down. Even though my work may deal with darker, more melancholic subjects I still need to be in a good mood in order to make it work... If there's no joy in painting there's no point, at least for me.
