I've got a little story I'm writing for this, but it's not done and I wanted to go ahead and post it XD

You know, what is it with Breaking Benjamin and songs that remind me of the sons of Mukot, that is, Shadow, UnLight, and UnDark. Note: They not actually "blood" related. They were all created by the same person (or people to be fair, since Serpent was the one who made UnLight and UnDark) and again this version of Shadow isn't really like the official one at all, but I digress.

I heard their song "Failure" on the radio, and immediately thought of Shadow and UnLight. Just different parts of the song reminded me of them. Shadow is "The Long and Lonely Road" while UnLight is "The Calm before the Cold" meaning how he puts mercy and forgiveness before anger, and is also completely opposite of UnDark, who he was created before. I'll just show the lyrics since I haven't finished my writing of it yet.

I'll link to a WIP of this picture where I was writing the story, so you can at least see what I've done so far, if you're curious It's pretty much the last version before this one. Just needed UnLight shaded and added effects.

If you do read that you'll see what I mean. I imagine this exchange between them happening shortly before UnLight meets Evelyn for the first time, and is so close to deciding to turn. Seeing this vulnerable side of Shadow just gets to him. He's realizing he wants acceptance and love but he's looking for it in the wrong place. He's also beginning to see just how wounded Shadow really is, and this helps him see...he's wounded too.

And yet despite them feeling like failures, each in their own way, despite "burying the sunlight" they know they've got no choice but to continue. They use the failure and the prospect of what could happen if they quit as something to inspire them to continue. They're still both melancholic people, despite the joys they do find in their lives. They just carry heavy burdens.

Different parts of the song just go with them. "Time will take our place, we return it back to one" refers to the goal of bringing Arandor back as Pure Light, something only UnLight can do when he does decide to turn, and the one thing Shadow suffers for. "The Dark before the Dawn, the war will carry on" that one is just explanatory.

Anyway the picture was fun to do. Shadow's...not always the easiest XD I think my biggest issue are his quills that UnLight is covering up. The shading on the topmost one isn't perfect either, but, I LOVE his arms and hands...just...wow, and they weren't referenced really either. I did look at an example I had drawn ages ago, but that was it. Again, he's in my style so he's got the neck and my style of face and the large tipped ears. It's my version of him so, it's fitting.

But UnLight...just...hnngg my baby DX The sketch version of him tugged at my heart and now he just...he just looks so sad. I added the hill and grass in the final version to make it look like he's not just...floating. They're the same size but I guess with adding the hill you can imagine it's right next to that wall Shadow's leaning against but the wall sits lower down, and that's why they look like that. Anyway positioning aside I love how they both came out. UnLight is just my baby <3

Used some brushes again that Gem bought, the rain one and the one used for those pillars of smoke. The other textures came with SAI.

Shadow belongs to Sega/Sonic Team...although this version of him is different from the official one.
UnLight belongs to me.
