This tutorial is so helpful, but it's difficult for me to do some of this. I have 'essential tremor', a condition where my handsΒ shake constantly, especially when trying to concentrate on holding something or working on small things (like my sculptures). This makes painting and sometimes even sculpting, a nightmare. I often have to do 3 or more coats because I paint super shakily and messΒ it up beyond repair. I've tried steadying my arms on a table when painting but it doesn't completely stop the shaking. So what if you royally screw up a paint job? Should I just do more coats until I get it or should I start completely over. Have you ever screwed up a sculpture really bad? (sorry for rambling) Thank you!

I really hope you find it helpful! If you have any questions please feel free to ask! My techniques have improved a bit now, and I think my sculpts look much better. They still use the same basic principal as this tutorial ^^

Would using air-dry clay have the same result as using polymer clay?

I haven't had much experience with air drying clay, but I hear good things about it. You just need to sculpt a bit faster so your piece doesn't dry before you're done.
I feel like you'd have to sculpt the entire thing all at once rather than bit by bit like I do.
It also might get some cracks (depending on the brand) but clay is really receptive to super glue.

Thanks! I might just go out and get some polymer clay and make some ponies! I'm more antiquated with ceramic clay, but I know for a fact I can't use wire in those.Β

Super Sculpey is quite similar to ceramic. (At least it's comparable) so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to work with!Β

Thank you! You're too kind I've been sculpting since 2011. I had never really played around with clay before and I progressed in it pretty quickly (if I do say so myself

Wow, this is incredibly helpful! I wish I was able to read it when I began sculpting- not only that, but there's a whole lot from your lovely tutorial that I can learn now! I especially like the section on detail sculpting, I'll definitely have to try out your method of creating legs and eyes. Fantastic work, and I know your fantastic tutorial will help a lot of people.Β
