Description The Federation Destroyer USS ARTEMIS, Joined by her sister ships the USS ATHENA and USS NEMESIS, caustiously aproaches the area of "Unusual Readings" their scans detected. The Task force comes upon a strange and distrubing scene of a number of Borg Cubes and Two new, as yet unclassified, Borg Vessel designs. One of them truely monsterous in dimensions and appearance.
Long Range Scans of this fleet of Borg Ships were oddly subdued, as if the vessels were somewhat cloaked, but not completely.
The Borg show no interest in the Federation Ships as they approach, they are all stationary, yet close range scans show they are fully powered, and have multitudes of life signs. It quickly becomes appearant that the Borg have no shields or defenses active, and no sign of any activity at all. As if they are sleeping, or regenerating...

Or laying a trap for the Task Force, Trying to lure them in.....

Captain Nowlin, Aboard the Artemis, Gets word from his Deltan Science Officer that the cloud, normally only drifting with the gravity currents of this system, is Moving, rather rapidly, for a cloud, towards the formation of Borg Vesssels, and it can be seen to already have extended tendrils to many of the vessels, as if it is probing them, investigating...
Perhaps the theory of this clouds sentience is true, It is certain the Borg here have assimulated all the Colonists in the Sigma Aurora system, maybe the Cloud is curious about what happend?. Or perhaps the Borg tried to study the cloud to aggresively, and it is fighting back?
They only thing that is certain, is that the Borg are, for whatever reason, Momentarily defenseless.

Captain Nowlin has a deadly choice to make.
>Does he take this unique opportunity to try and discover what is happening. Hoping the Borg remain defenseless while they investigate?
>should he contact StarFleet Command? this IS a rare chance to try some of the new ideas for infiltrating or infecting the Borg with some \thing that might wipe the whole damn civilization out for good. Starfleet would likely have something ready to try....
>Or should he take this one brief moment of vulnerability and Attack with everything they have?. Hoping to cripple or destroy this viscious and uncompromising menace before they can Assimulate more innocents, and perhaps conquer the Federation with whatever Ugliness these new ship designs represent?

The Moment is but a small slice of time, frozen in the cold vastness of space, and it is such brief instances upon which history, for doom or salvation, is made....
-------------------------------------------------------

Well? What's it going to be Butch?

All Borgishness by Moi. I decided to use the husk of the Dyson's Sphere to make a really BIG Borg vessel. And tried to make something really new and nasty for the bad guys as well. The Borg Icosahedrans are my idea too. They are actually about the same Diameter as a Galaxy Class is long. the ones near the Cube are about the right scale and are very close to the Cube. I know what nastiness they are made for. A huge cookie for anyone who figures it out.

Really good artwork, though I'm not a Star Trek fan (Doctor Who rules!)

It reminds me of the Beserker stories.

I am glad you liked it my friend. And truthfully, I am not a big Trek fan either(though I do like it). But I am shamelessly pandering to those trekies out there in the best, traditional, American way
I humbly bow to even being in the same sentence with Mr. Saberhagen, A true giant of Sci-Fi

Never thought of doing a berserker, might be a real challenge, given my cheesy lil programs limitations, Have to do up a whole new texture scheme for those nasties, they warrent uniqueness

Thanks Mucho for the Fav's

thanks amigo! the post work includes the cloud, it's tendrils and the sparklies inside, though those tend to look like stars shinning behind it. Much of the actual stars are post work to add and size them to come out of the BG better. Not alot on this one.

Hoping the one coming up will top it. Captain Butch Nowlin ordered an all out attack to wipe the vile things from his sky. So got the ships all posed n done, just gotta do the postwork and it is fini!

This is a classic "TNG" style picture. I love the way you put it together, and the more "muted" colors are actually very cool.

Plus, the Borg craft look super ominous.

I also agree with the Schlock Mercenary quote. There is no overkill. There is only "open fire" and "time to reload."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rfalk In reply to dmaland [2008-03-12 04:28:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Lots Dan
the skin on the Fed ships is mostly cause I have few decent ST textures. But, I really liked this ones for its NOT being basic white with black detailing. I too liked the muted colors of it

I was real happy with the way the lil Borg ships came out. The concept is that they are Mostly Transporters and Buffers. I call them "Borg Harvesters"
It is far more efficient to just beam everyone on a planet into Buffers and bring them out into a gang of drones for "Processing" then to do all that fighting. The transporter is also better for taking selective parts of a ship or city (like the piping, machinery etc; ) then to tear it all up.

And since the Borg teleporters seem to work just fine through Fed shields..... No more messy and costly battles where you lose drones and potential assimulatees

Butchen Had this to say also
"Schlock Mercenary rule #23 there is no such thing as OVERKILL!!!!!.......................the command is KILL'EM ALL AND LET GOD SORT'EM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if they even have a GOD.............."

Seems you two share the same violent, anti-PC view about dealing with adversaries

I had the Borg Cubes Nailed! the yellow glow was seen through a transparancy mask and had depth, it was cool. but somehow it got flattend during their tranfer to the scene. That is my only "Dhooo" in this one. Gotta fix it for the combat scene
Loved the cube in your gallery BTW, very sweet. And congrates on the Air Force sholarship

Gotta love how rendering engines mess things up. Do you have photoshop? If so, you could always use the magic wand tool to select those areas, make them a new layer, and add outer glow to them. As for the transparency mask, I actually used the exact same technique as you did for my Utopia Planitia station. Great minds, eh?

rfalk In reply to JamieTakahashi [2008-03-11 04:25:37 +0000 UTC]

Always Welcome Amigo!
I have Photoshop. Will be using it in the next scene for the combat. I also did the cloud mostly there also.
Good idea. I know how to do that, but actually didn't occur to me to do it here. the next scene calls for some real close ups, so it will be a very helpful suggestion for that
Didn't get a full view of the Utopia Planitia yet. Now you have my curiousity up

I use a very old and simple program called Corel Dream 3D that came bundled with Coreldraw 8 (trying to learn Bryce and find a good n easy modeler now). it is real limited, so I HAVE to use every trick I came fool it into doing just to get a decent FX. the Transparancy Mask is always fun, but finicky in my program. It will be cool to see what you do with it

JamieTakahashi In reply to rfalk [2008-03-11 19:02:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I like the program I'm using (AC3D). It was only $50, and the interface is really easy to get used to. It can't use more than one texture at a time, though, but that's okay since I can add more in the rendering engine.

So I understand you generally take in the picture more then the comment (I really DO understand!). But this one time your in the story and I am needing you to give your orders Captain

I had those damn Borg Cubes Nailed! there is a slightly glowing cube inside the surface cube with a transparency that took hours to make. Looked Awsome even close up. Then... Somehow it went flat on me during copy n pasting and they aren't showing the FX? does this suck or what?

rfalk In reply to butchen [2008-03-11 04:16:30 +0000 UTC]

HE Choooooose #3

All hands, BattleStations!

There was no real 'Right Answer' to this, much like life. All three were viable potential solutions. But #3 was the only real way to be sure of not giving the Borg a chance to 'Adapt' to what was going on.

#1 would have been Okay. But left the Borg with the possibility of recovery.
#2 would have worked, but only on this group. The Vast Collective itself would have neutralized the computer or biological virus way before it became a problem. And likely now see the federation as the ultimate threat and launch a full scale invasion. Not good, but only a potential outcome.
#3 Well, we'll see The 'Core' of the monster ship is temporarily vulnerable, it is an unstable Quantum Singularity, Breaching the containment wall will be hard, But your Mauler Cannon should be able to do it. this would cause the QS to totally destabalize in a massive explosion that should engulf the surrounding 12 Borg cubes and 48 Icosahedrans.

>Your sister ships can either join in the attack or be situated to protect your ship while it is trying to punch through the containment wall. Whats yer call? (that will be the last question)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

butchen In reply to rfalk [2008-03-11 14:06:14 +0000 UTC]

no brother there was but one answer ...................KILL THEM ALL..............sorry but that is how I feel..........#3 was the only answer

so the command is "We got this ya'll......... ..........ya'll can watch or what ever but we got this..........ain't no thing" .............

rfalk In reply to butchen [2008-03-11 14:14:57 +0000 UTC]

Option 2!!! If the Starfleet has even a small chance of defeating the Borg for good, it must be utilized immediately! Option 3 could be sort of backup plan: if something goes wrong, the Starfleet ships can always try to blast the evil Borg into oblivion... Oprion 1 is nothing but foolishness: on the instant the away team etc. gets inside the biggest Borg ship, the drones wake up and announce: "We are the Borg." and "You will be assimilated."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rfalk In reply to GeneralZadrek [2008-03-10 20:58:03 +0000 UTC]

Your likely right about 1, but whatever is rendering the Borg inert might also prove to be an answer to the Borg problem for good. See, the decision is never easy for Star Fleet Captains. Always some bonehead in the back going "But! What if!!"

I'll let you know how #2 would have worked after Captain Butch gives his order
