Description
Here's the paint job on the llama that I sculpted recently.Airbrush with acrylic ink and regular craft acrylic for detailing, over super sculpey firm. 8.5" tall.
Commission. Customer wanted to give a gift to her boyfriend who likes llamas and flutes, and this is what she and I decided to go with.
I had to take some liberties with llama anatomy (especially the neck and front legs), but I'm really happy with how it all turned out.
Unpainted sculpture is viewable here: [link]

If I was a llama I'd play the flute, but it would probably be quite difficult ebcause of my GIANT LLAMA LIPS.

WOW. The detail, and the anatomy is just phenomenal. Did you just attack the clay with a tool to get all the fur effect? This piece is really dramatic, I keep imagining what it would be like to have a little llama like this, to see it in real life. Um...why a flute, though? Seems unlikely for an ungulate.

Forgot to answer your other questions, sorry!
I kind of "stab" the clay with a rounded leaf-shaped tool I have to make a rough shaggy fur pattern, and then I smooth the whole thing down with rubbing alcohol. The secret is to vary the pattern and the tool pressure all while going in the direction that fur would grow on a real animal. It still ends up being a little stylized this way, but I like how it turns out.

I love how the fur looks - and the piece in general - and the rubbing alcohol I wouldn't have guess was compatible with clay. Learn new things every day, right?
I'll be taking ceramics this coming semester, THANK YOU JESUS, so you shall soon get to see what it looks like when I put MY hands to clay. Much joy and merriment shall be had!

It's compatible with the type of clay I use. So is turpentine, and so is lighter fluid, but rubbing alcohol is the gentlest of those, both health-wise and solvent-wise. I've used turpentine in the past for smoothing things, but it's a stinky hassle, really.
Have fun with the ceramics class! Sculpture is a fun medium and it'll be cool to see what you make.

Thanks!
Why the flute? The person commissioning this piece wanted it. I was going to sculpt a more realistic llama for her, but she wanted to incorporate one of her boyfriend's interests into the sculpture, since it's a gift for him. He loves llamas, and playing the flute, so this ws the obvious choice.
