I saw some of these at the Boston Aquarium and they are massive! I love turtle skeletons, how there's so little bones within the shell. It's like an exoskeleton made out of bone instead of......chitin? I can never remember what that stuff is called.

I think chitin is the right word. Excellent observation.
Turtle skeletons astound me too. They're so alien, so perfectly adapted for what the animal needs. All that armor.
Hey, I meant to ask you earlier... What field of biology are you planning on specializing in when you go to college?
I was on the pre-vet route, but was derailed by an overpowering urge to become an art major.

If you had asked me that a few years ago, I could have told you Paleontology. Definately.
Now....I dunno. It seems to change every week, I like Biochemistry though. Maybe something in forensic anthropology or pharmacological sciences. (I think I just invented that last one...)
I could never be a vet. I'd be sobbing louder than the owners whenever an animal died.

Hey, you've still got plenty of time to figure out what you want to do.
Biochem sounds fun! At one time I thought about getting into that field, back when I was all ambitious and stuff. Pharmacology's nifty too. I'm sure you'd rock at either, or at anything to do with bio.
Yeah, being a vet would certainly take its toll.

I've never seen a live one in person. I'm sure they're amazingly beautiful, though. I've seen them on nature shows and have always thought they were lovely animals.

they remind me of airplanes...they glide right under the surface of the water. they are really cute, but i'm afraid of messing with them...they have tremendously sparp beaks

Wow! That's cool. Do you see them often in Florida?
Yes, I wouldn't mess with them either. Turtles have enormously strong jaws, and aren't afraid to use them.

i've yet to see them on the Atlantic side of the Keys, but i have seen them in the Gulf, and Florida Bay. i know of a beach nearby my home where they nest, you see the nests marked off by chicken wire so people don't step on them. but i haven't seen the actual turtles come on shore, or the little ones hatch...i've always managed to miss them. oh well:shurgs:

Maybe someday you'll see them. I bet it's truly a sight to behold, and something you'd remember forever.

Oh, I hope she does like it!
These photos are a bit on the dark side and probably do get lost on many monitors. Sorry.
