Description Found a straggler from my college project and decided (with much encouragement from ) to submit it.

I'm fairly certain that this is a baboon skeleton.

I really like the lighting, the focus is on the teeth and you kinda lose the eye sockets. Interesting compostion and pose. What class was this for? Just a photography class?

Yep... This was part of a 10-piece project for my Advanced Photography class in college.

Most of the others from this project are in my gallery somewhere.

I shot a bunch of rolls in the Zoology laboratory with all the lights out and used a flashlight as my only lightsource. It was really, really fun, and I miss having access all of those skeletons and specimens in jars...

Thanks--glad you like the photo, and thanks for commenting too!

EEK! Monkey need dental work! You did a good job capturing those teeth

Yeah, he needs an incisor makeover, I think. Maybe one too many hockey games without a mouthguard? Who knows?

Thanks! I'm glad you like him!

He he he...Baboons manage to look silly even as skeletons. Why am I thinking of Jerry Lewis? It is most bizarre (My thoughts, not the photo).
Great photo and the lighting is superb, dark enough to make it eerie and spooky (ish...nobody takes a monkey seriously) and enough light to allow us to see fine detail like texture of the bone and teeth.
Good work!!

Thanks! I think baboons look much more badass (for lack of a sophisticated technical term... ) with fur and muscles... This skeleton looks kinda goofy, especially from this angle, you're right.

My lighting secret (well, not much of a secret, since I'm sharing it!) in this shot, and the others in this series, was the use of a small maglite flashlight in otherwise complete darkness.

Add to that a tripod and a shutter release cable for my Nikon, and that's the effect I got.

Glad you like it, and thanks again for the closer look.

Male baboons look quite ferocious indeed....especially with those long fangs.

Oh and you're quite welcome...it is a pleasure to comment and view your work.

Really nice head (skull). I really love the way you gave (submitted) it. If you erased the legs, it would be "monkey head on a stick" You already know how much I love you (r photos). I love it when you keep me up (dated).

Really nice try though...

And you got to use the word "breast" in a sentence... Never a bad thing.

I'll certainly keep you a breast* (of my progress).

very nice contrast - man - they have a large nose hole...

All the better for olfactory reception!

I'm a big fan of high contrast stuff... Deep shadows and such...

The only light source in this was a small maglite flashlight...

I wish I could develop more of my negatives from this particular project... But I haven't got a darkroom, and there's no way I'd trust a local photoprocessing place to make prints... :sigh: maybe someday I'll have my own darkroom. Or at least a scanner that'll scan negatives.

Sorry for the rant!

Primates are awesome! I have a few other photographs in my gallery which contain primates. Skeletons like this one.

I'm glad you like this photo! Thanks for the comment, too.
