Description
dA's sculpture categories really need work.I picked up some Chavant Le Beau TouchΓ© HM to play with and sculpted this dude today with it. I like it, although it's really sticky and almost a little too soft for my liking. But that's a good thing, in a way, because I can't refine things too far.

You have to try Chavant NSP! Try either soft or medium of you like Le Beau Touche. It's better in ever way in my opinion. More stable, not sticky. No sulphur. Great stuff!

Tapirs are awesome. I believe this is the first sculpture of one I have ever seen. Very nice.

Thanks! If you're interested in trying out Chavant, they have a bunch of different types of clay and will send you a sample pack of 17 different clays (something like 4 1/4 pounds of clay total; you get a 1/4 pound of each type, which is plenty to play with) they make for like $15. Just call the 800-number on their site: [link]
Some of their clays are very very hard at room temperature, and some are very soft. The stuff I bought is relatively hard at room temperature, but warms up quickly if you slice off a small piece and work it. It's really sticky and will make your hands sticky, but cleans up really well with baby wipes, of all things. For the harder grades of clay, you need to warm up the clay before using it, and most people do that by lining a box with foil, cutting a circle in the top and resting a 60 watt bulb in a studio lamp on top. Anyway, it's neat stuff. The only drawback is that if you create anything with it that you want to paint your piece, you have to make a mold of the piece and make a casting.

I really love the face structure, the lighting catches the surfaces and crevices very well. Even though it's not refined in detail the face still makes up for that!
Also indirect to your sculpt. Sculpting categorizes do need serious adding too! ^Thebuild did a poll about what categorizes to add in Sculpture so hopefully something might change!

Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
Really pleased to hear that ^Thebuild is taking charge of adding more categories to Sculpture. Thank you for letting me know!

Your very welcome! I'm happy too! It'd be nice to place my animal sculpts in an Animal category for once.

What kind of Tapir is this, might I ask?
It really is adorable. I love your work.

Thanks!
This is based on a Brazilian Tapir.

No problem!
And thanks, I was wondering since the only specific Tapir I knew of before was the Baird's Tapir, which does not have a mane.

Your comment about not refining too much really made me think of this guys work: [link] His sculpture is fantastic, check it out.
Getting back to this though...it's quite nice for a bust/study. I like the texture and the ears are so cute!

Thanks!
Yeah, I love ~thedoberman 's work! He does gorgeous sculptures, and probably inspired this indirectly, at least in part.

This is really great work.
I enjoy that you chose such a random subject to portray here.
Tapirs are adorable critters.

Thank you!
Glad that you appreciate my choice of subject. It was fun to sculpt an under-represented animal. Tapirs have such interesting faces and anatomy, and yes, they are adorable indeed.
