Description Complete with state the obvious commentary, woo yeah!

It's not a tutorial or anything, just what I do. Demonstrated on something I sketched a few weeks ago when I was sick, well out of it and...watching MLP: FiM, haha uhhhh

I hope it gives you guys who were asking a better idea of how the pencil and watercolour goes together, anyway! If you have any questions I'll answer them here~

"Do you wait for the wash to dry before lining with a 2H?"
Oh, yeah. Lining comes out terrible on wet paper for me. Colour pencil too. The watercolour only takes about a minute to dry. Sometimes I tap it down with my fingers to even it out and dry it faster. I give larger washes about 20 seconds and then flatten them under my hand for a minute or two to stop them buckling. It's not very professional haha C:

"Do you trace your sketch onto a new piece of paper before painting it?"
Nope! I scribble til I get what I want, lighten the lines with an eraser and redefine the ones I need. An eraser pencil is really handy for editing sketches like this, it's just a pencil with eraser where the graphite usually is haha, it's amazing!
Also it's actually reeaally light to begin with, like it is in the first watercolour stage, but when it's just a sketch the scanner picks up everything and darkens it like crazy~

im sorry for asking questions that probably everyone but me knows but, what do you mean by giving it a "wash"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to JustAnotherNinja [2011-08-25 17:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, that's fine! A wash is a layer of watercolour that is very pale and mostly water (:

Oh nah it was something I was colouring anyway so...and some of the people I owe wanted to see a walkthrough so it like...bought me some time from feeling guilty about them while still allowing me to paint some dumb thing for my own amusement?

But yeah scanning steps is fun anyway 8D

1B6 In reply to Ricefish [2011-06-15 11:26:25 +0000 UTC]

lol...I don't even have steps ):
I never mean to draw anything, it always happens by accident. I make plans, sure, but I never follow them through. If I am lucky then I can twist what I'm doing/ what I've done into something close.

Man, you sure know how to feel guilt selectively don't you lol.

Ricefish In reply to 1B6 [2011-06-20 13:54:16 +0000 UTC]

But...you have to have steps right? Like...with the different layers and everything? Blocking in shapes and defining them? It's just technique broken down man, doesn't necessarily have to involve planning or whatever

Well...I feel the sensible guilt that lets you know when your dickish behaviour might be screwing up future prospects, buuut it's pretty easy to switch off 8D

1B6 In reply to Ricefish [2011-06-20 14:26:20 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, but it's all jumbled, it aint steps. Block in something here or maybe outline it instead or draw some strands somewhere. Seriously lol.

Hahaha~ lucky~

I never thought about keeping the pencil! I usually just ink the lines or just erase the lines altogether. Thanks for the tips! ^_^

I have a couple of questions that usually stump me what size do you usually work at (this character for example; how big on the paper was he?)

How do you add such a well blended background without leaking onto the character?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to Bear-hybrid [2011-08-25 17:25:04 +0000 UTC]

This character is about a quarter of an A4 page, and most of my things are either around half A4 or close to full. I work pretty small :'D

I've never had a problem with leaky colours, I guess because I use very small brushes and not much water? I think colours bleed mostly when you have wet colour or water sitting on the paper and try to add more to it before it has a chance to absorb, but I'm not sure!

I don't think I have ever heard of an eraser pencil - that's a neat idea! Though it sounds like those "electric erasers" would work about the same way since they have tiny pencil-y points.

Thanks so much for this demo!!

Ricefish In reply to NycterisA [2011-08-25 15:57:07 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! I've never tried an electric eraser before, I don't think I've seen them in stores. I bet they would worry me though :'D

I've always wondered how you'd get those sassy pencil linearts! I'll try your advice when i have some time to paint<3

How much time does a piece like this takes you? It seems like something i would take all day on OTL

ManueC [2011-04-28 16:15:51 +0000 UTC]

it's nice to see how you do it!

Do you use watercolor paper? because the surface is 'hard' and when you try to add pencils it can be ugly with all the texture in the paper...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ricefish In reply to ManueC [2011-08-25 15:03:18 +0000 UTC]

I know, watercolour paper can be so troublesome! I use Smooth Bristol, it has pretty much no texture at all, it's brilliant. It's only really suited to light watercolour washes, but if you're careful with layers and don't pile too much water on at once it works like a dream! (:

I didn't know you used so much colored pencil in your work; I always wondered how you got your watercolors to look so clean! God I love your art. Your fantastic use of color is the ultimate eye candy. I usually do all the painting, then all the colored pencil touchups. I'll have to try mixing it up next time. (:

Ricefish In reply to Simkaye [2011-08-25 14:59:35 +0000 UTC]

Heheh yeah! Layering watercolour and pencil over and over kinda cancels out a lot of the unwanted textures from both! :'D
