Description Β Reading this WATERCOLOR from left to right, one might justifiably get the feeling that something
has gone quite wrong. The shiny, bright and happy horse we once rode at the fair has turned into something right
out of The Hound of the Baskervilles.

I rather hated it at first...but over time it has
become one of my best efforts, although it would be
rejected by The Academy and The American Watercolor Society.
Like my latest watercolor, I'm sure now: I'm painting my feelings.

THANKS SO MUCH!!! Richard

Hey art is art no matter what some silly academy says! It's wonderful! Also painting your feelings, that is a wonderful idea.

I always thought that a Merry-Go-Round had something disturbing.
The horse moves menacingly towards you, throwing open the teeth
and turns into a liquid spectrum even more scary...
Magic watercolors,as in all your works.

Exactly. I've already deleted much of my lengthy description....but yes, it's about turning a corner in life, toward something that is more scary than I had imagined: Retirement.
You've read the painting quite well. Thanks for your observations!

I can only agree with what Aini is saying here, and trust me, I know that "corner of the world" that you are presently describing.Β
Coming from being a very busy teacher, with lots of friends to visit...I now find myself in a country where work is scarce, the language almost impossible, and friends are something I have in Cyber. Β I do my explorings in this new and marvelous country that I am now living in, being accompanied by my camera and the trusty dog, and sometimes Aini, when she is not working. Β Not only do I find great new Landscapes, but certainly also new Inner Landscapes. Β It has taken me three years, but I am really now starting to enjoy myself....You will pull through..I have no doubts about that..

Smiles and best wishes

Your words are indeed encouraging, Michael. THANKS so much. I am beginning to make some phone calls...
I even played tennis last night, with another retired school bus driver. We have really re-connected. I also joined
a Health Club, free, thanks to my new Supplemental Health Insurance. I appreciated that you have shared some
painful realities that have been part of your life. THANKS so much for that. BTW...I finally found a renowned book
to read ~ at the library yesterday: A CHOICE OF WEAPONS, by the famous photojournalist, Gordon Parks. A Black
photographer who would certainly be covering the atrocities in Ferguson Missouri. He died in 2006, fairly old
and super-respected. (Good title: The weapon he chose....was a camera, which he used to combat racism, still
very alive in this country), injustice and discrimination. You might want to check it out.... Anyway...thanks for
being supportive Michael!!!
Best wishes... and carry on!

THANKS Michael ... it has a sad opening; he was born in 1912 and had to leave the
South (Kansas) and move up north to escape racial killings, only to find it not so great
in St Paul Minneapolis. He was the first Black to be hired as a photographer for Life Magazine.

A very strong work, Richard, surrealistic, beautiful and a bit scary at the same time.
What can I say? If there is emptiness, it will be filled (and in that way the problem will be solved)... it requires some time, but it will happen, IΒ΄m sure about this! Making art is a good way to handle it, and you are so good in what youΒ΄re doing! And donΒ΄t force, just let your subconscious work...
Lots of hugs,
Aini

HA HA...thanks for the great comments Aini! As in all my works, I DO NOT plan to do a piece that
seems to mirror exactly what I'm currently experiencing. I certainly guided it, and kept looking at it...
and decided to 'look into a merry-go-round idea' ~ so I found a Google image and painted it realistically.
Then the idea was starting to really gel with me: I AM REALLY TURNING A CORNER IN LIFE ~ a move
I had begun to plan last winter. So...I am encouraged to look at life as a series of SEASONS...and the one
I'm in now is not exactly like being a 'newly wed' or a new father! Quite the opposite. Anyway, I always
appreciate my special friends ~ such as you and Michael ~ to 'comment and support.' THANKS so much...

Now, on to Michael's comments..

No, probably not. But I really over-wrote my description here, thus not allowing the viewer to form her own opinions, etc etc as to what's going on in this mess. Truly, I should learn to be as brief as most Deviants! But, as we say, "I wear my heart on my sleeve!"

As I worked thru this piece, I kept thinking of it as a Jackson Pollack
trying really hard to turn itself into reality. It was and IS a bit of a mess*....
the piece I'm about to start painting is much more REAL...and friendly....
far less angst!!! Hooray!!!!
THANKS so much for your comments
and for taking the time to write me....
Truly appreciative:

*And I hope this will not be taken as a put down OR a comparison to
Pollack. He's not my favorite artist, but he did indeed break new ground...

I think the creepiest part of the image is the perspective with the horse's mouth almost leaving the paper!!! Excellent as always!!Β

As to life changes... I don't know what to say... My siblings and I just emptied out mom's house so we are on the other side of the spectrum. She is traveling more and going to more cultural events than before. I don't know if those are activities that you can partake. Lots of hugs and good wishes!

THANKS Gloria for your superb comments...as to the life changes, I wish men could bond as
easily as the women do. My wife has an Hispanic Group of women...and they do all kinds of things
together. Men have a harder time with these things. I certainly had many male friends and acquaintances ,
but now that I'm retired from driving the school bus, we just say 'goodbye' to each other. And yes,
my wife and I do go to cultural things, movies, the St Paul Chamber orchestra etc etc. And I've
got a pretty good daily routine ~ just so few people. I can only sustain a conversation with the
checkout person at Target...for so long. Then, back home again. What would life be without
problems and challenges? Thanks so much for your support ~ I truly appreciate it!!

Hugs, etc back to you too...Richard

Yes. One can also argue that it has given you the maturity as well to explore things in your art that you would have bee incapable of doing so earlier on. Even as this particular piece disturbs me, it is also extremely entrancing and invites the viewer to reflect on their own lives and get lost within its intricacies.

I think I wrote way too much!
I have to learn to be more 'allowing' of
other interpretations. Picasso said:
"If you have to write about it, to
explain it, why do the art?"

for itself, and little bit more. THANKS AGAIN!!!
