thereΒ΄s a great visual finesse on this one , but this caught my attention with itΒ΄s message as well -
thereΒ΄s things in art that should not be done , and yet .. usually the most creative things spring from that font , of things that should not to be done , same is true in life too , but they tend to put that kind of people in prison ..

Well, for me it's a kind of protest piece about things we are not "supposed" to do that we are in fact free to do or even should do. I have a short list of them... But that's only my own take on the piece.

This has an urban feel... I like your work as most of the collages have a tender intimacy.
THIS strikes me as so outdoorsy, that I miss New York.

Thanks, I can see that. Interestingly, a couple of the scraps in this actually sat outdoors for a long time, I wonder if that came through somehow.

of course we shouldn't pay too much attention to every DO NOT...
but this one deserves attention - great work, Richard!

love this...do not what my mind thinks and I see the title of And yet...makes me wonder if I would even listen if I were told what...for I am not much of a follower but logically I would adhere to something that would be beneficial to my self preservation.

Thanks very much for the comment, I like the way you picked up on the title and went with it

Human nature tends to send folks straight into the arms of the "thou shalt nots". the big ones are rock solid, IMHO but the unwritten and opined ones are always up for questioning. lol.
I like all that color and texture. Kudos.

Thanks and that is well observed about human nature and the different degrees of "shalt nots" - I agree.

I still remember how stunning it was when I went to college and you could chew a piece of gum in class. Heck, you could drink a cup of coffee! But grade school and high school... no way. What was that all about anyway.

Being indoctrinated into the "follow the rules" culture. Know who the boss is and do as you're told. This prepares you for a major in gum chewing later, where you can chew but not pop loud bubbles, which would disturb the learning process and professor Juicyfruit.
(Don't mind me, I just got off work and I'm very tired. And silly.)

I am once again not sure about this one..hm...But dont listen to me. I am starting to use the criteria I use on my own work to others work. I dont like what I do right now β and maybe I am overfed with collages. As I said; dont listen to me! I am better anyway, building my self up, our gallery had our first opening, met old friends, talked...
Hm - it is like you do so many great collages and when they dont live my expectation.....
take care

I know of what you speak! I am going to have to put my musings on these subjects a journal entry of their own. About creativity, how we lose it, how and where we find it, what the shift between mediums mean, how you can feel as if you imaginative soul runs dry, how we look at our art, and WHY it changes with time ... all this and more has been tumbling around my head for some time, including the capacity we have for being objective with other's work, while we feel like we are on quicksand with our own creations.
I will have to take the time somewhat sooner than later too really explore these questions ...

I have red lts of books about creativity. Which I've forgotten. What books?
I remember a nice title though: you can find inspiration in everything and if you can't,look again.the title is better than the book!
But if you dont make you living from then it does not really matter if you want to make art or not as long as you want to something meaningful. And if you dont worry βyour inspiration will come back.

Glad you are better, Ed, and that's good about the gallery opening and seeing old friends.
Thanks for your feedback on this one, I won't take it overly seriously but I do appreciate it. This piece here is perhaps not my "best" work but I like some of the moves I made in it. I have done some thinking about my "best" work and my "not best" - I will post a piece if I feel that it has something to say even if it is not "best." I know it is also possible for a piece to fail, not to say anything - I don't think this one failed... I always see my stuff more clearly some time after I make it.
I am glad that you have high expectations of my work. Feel free to keep on saying when a piece doesn't work for you. A good Monday afternoon to you!

Hi Richard. Feeling even better now, even though a "NY collector" didn't want to pay my price for an old collage. I have my pride as an artist! Some people sell there stuff dirt cheap on etsy and elsewhere. Glad he asked though. Dont worry β yourpices doesnt have to be the "best"to be shown on DA. Just interesting, and they usually are.I have looked (and thrown a way a great bunch) of my old collages. I tell some of them were not that great β yours much better. If I can!
Yes time β if they still good after a month......
But next time I grump over your work (can one say that?) I will try tell you what I dont like.
A good day to you too Sir!

i will tell you what i meant by the title. the text in the collage says "Do Not", the title is "And yet", and the unspoken words are "We do." and I mean that in a positive way - the "do not"s we hear and feel are not the end of the story. in the image itself the "do not" is torn and stained and wearing away. i hope this makes some sense.

Just read your comments with Laura...it adds so much to a piece to hear a bit of the history.

Oh, murky! That white overlay effect looks like transfer residue. I wish I had the courage to not fill up every darn corner of a piece. The space around the focal point here is such an enhancement.

Thanks very much. In this case, the piece was inspired by the background so I definitely didn't fill it in. What it is is the backside of a thin plastic label that had been exposed to the weather - found it outside a few days ago.
