Description
The second three spreads of an altered book. Source material is Children's Hour with Mother Goose Rhymes, 1922, illustrated by Lois Lenski.Ink and collage. Each spread about 23 x 14 cm.
Top: Jack and Jill
Middle: Goosey, Goosey Gander and Handy-Spandy, Jack-a-Dandy
Bottom: Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son and Doctor Faustus
I will probably elide words from Doctor Faustus in the future, but it is so strange I wanted to present it unaltered first.

see...this is why I needed to 'watch you'..(that sounded so strange...in a 'me' sort of way) OK now to 'you', I love this, I have so many old children's books, I wonder about altering them tho' it's a brave thing to do, for me, as I think they're better off packed away and never looked at? hmmmm I think I just talked myself into it! (now wait, that wasn't about 'you ' at all!) You inspired me! You show a great sense of childlike spirit, you're observation was so fun to 'experience...Bravo!

Crash! The sharp axe has undone you.

There, he's split, I see.

Both halves scurry
In a hurry,
Rise like towers
There beside me.

Off they run, till wet and wetter
Hall and steps immersed are Iying.

Ah, he comes excited.
Sir, my need is sore.

As far as I can judge it is not bad at all. At least the rhythm is pretty close to the original.

Absolutely. When I was a Ph.D. student I used to do some technical translations for Philips in the Netherlands (good money, thoug !!) English -> German for what they called Automated Laboratory Management System. The space they had for the original english version on their (80ies) computer screens was never sufficient for (my) german version. It was the toughest part to "shrink" the German version down to the available space ...

i'm not saying you are or aren't - either way you might be right! i had a notion of covering up most of it, but it does go awfully well with the "made in america" on the facing page. all things become clear in time. except what doesn't.

This is wonderful. I love how you capture the dark-twistedness under the primary colours of childhood. I remember Dr Faustus from my childhood - it didn't strike me as strange then (in fact,I thought it captured the essence of my second grade teacher perfectly!).

Personally, I like the concept of the bottom panel with Doctor "US". Very tongue in cheek if the intended connotation is the one I took. The imperialistic, vicious, "keep in line" order abouts that can only be "Made in America"
