Description
In 1935, the decision was made by the government of the island of Obbeeys to construct a big military base on the small and sparsely populated island located on the north eastern coast of the island in response to the rearmament of Germany. This resulted in the extention of the Shoreside branchline onto the unnamed island and this branch being linked to the Ard-Valley branchline in Freayltys' Gate. The extention was made in the form of a tramway. For this purpose, a new class of 0-6-0 tram engines were drawn up by Richard O'Donnel. They were inspired by the GWR panniertanks and the LNER J70. In 1936 the first batch of two was built, and in 1937 another five where built. The engines were owned by both the Obbeeys Railway and the islands military. The engines got the nickname 'Freayltys', after the place most people of the island saw the engines most often.
