Description:
[] Step 1-4 is my usual hair colouring process.
(1) Start with base color
(2) Add the first shading, which is a darker colour of the base
(3) 2nd shade which is even darker than the previous
(4) finally the highlights
[] Next I make a new layer above the hair, and softly add the gradient color. The layer mode should be in 'overlay'. I use two color for this example, purple for the top part and yellow for bottom. The color will be different in overlay mode usually, as you can see the purple one turns the hair into reddish pink shade rather than actual purple.
I added the normal layer picture so you can see what it's like. Feel free to adjust the opacity of the layer as needed so the gradient won't be too harsh.

Sorry for the short tutorial, but I hope it at least shows how I do it. I rarely do gradient hair, but it's fun once in a while<3
I've used this method for both SAI and Photoshop, makes no difference for me

Ok so basically, you first add the base color
Next you add the shading
Then you add a darker shade on the tips/bottom of the hair(bangs included) and top and make it fade out towards whatever direction your going in
Afterwards you add highlights on wherever the light is shining on the character.
Finally add the gradient and overlay.
But overall the places where you shade in the shadows and highlights varies depending on the light angle and the hair color palette should at least have 4 or more of the shade your using(ranging from very light to dark)

Have one question, how do you pick the colors for the gradient?
I mean, i'm sure you dont always ue purple and yellow.
I have my troubles doing the gradient in hair since I always fail to pick the right colors. xd
Till now I have used thr ''triad'' colors, but it's not very pretty everytime. :c

for me it's more trial and error, I kept the gradient layer in overlay, then I just paint over it with one color, example, in the pict I want the gradient to be more red, then I paint with red, but it didn't turns out like what I wanted, so I just chose another color close to the one before until it matches the tone that I want , I hope that explains it
