Temperament: Barnard is strong and bulky and he knows it; like most Obertaurers, he's brave, confident and independent, though with a bit of a sweeter disposition thanks to being an OTX and both of his parents being quite sweet as well. He can be fussy though, a trait which despite conditioning since he was a foal has persisted. He will buck or throw his head if he's upset or doesn't like something, and is no stranger to conveying his displeasure. Barnard is okay around other horses, be they stallions or mares; he does get upset whenever his handler has to leave on work trips and doesn't take him along (though that has become infrequent now that he is saddle-broken and of age to be ridden.) Tends to have a perpetual straight-faced look to him, whether he's feeling well or poorly.
Handling: Strong and powerful under saddle, with confident gaits. Doesn't seem to contemplate the terrain he's crossing or the jumps he makes, but that's because he's already three steps ahead and has figured out what's coming at him already. Taking on something unexpected or fresh is the best way to grab his attention. Has a tendency to put on bursts of speed and make flying changes, as opposed to keeping a gradual or constant speed; this is a horse where when you put on the brakes or tap the gas, it gets multiplied by at least 3x. Will always stomp his hooves and huff whenever you have to apply sunscreen to his sensitive velvet skin areas, and will do the same when being bathed; is fine with being brushed and having his hooves touched for shoeing or picking out.

History: Star Rider was purchased as a young yearling from Soaring Dream Stables , as a prospective all-'rounder horse, after some introduction beforehand as a weanling. Tsubasa thought the young colt (which he named Barnard, after the red dwarf star) was quite cute, and he had been interested in purchasing at least an Obertaurer cross for some time; they were known to be hardy, independent, and naturally suited to the colder, more mountainous climate that the Outpost was based in. After taking care of Tokotas with differing care needs as well, he was confident he could take on the challenge of caring for a Velvet Obertaurer, despite their higher sensitivity. He wasn't planning on using Barnard as a working or pack horse anyways; Tsubasa hadn't had a horse that was properly his to ride, whenever and wherever he wanted on a whim, in a long time. He was excited at the prospect of a bit more freedom on horseback!
  After Barnard was transported to Akantha, he started some basic training (learning how to walk on a lead rope, handling a saddle and some basic tack, etc.) once he was about two years, and by three and a half he was cleared to start being saddle-broken and taking his first steps under a rider. Then it was time for low-level training in movements, and seeing how he handled over trail rides -- both of which he did beautifully with. Though Tsubasa had been a smidge hopeful that being an OTX would lessen the Obertaurer's natural staunch single-person loyalty to at least allow for his wife to assist in Barnard's care, since that would make keeping him in shape easier while Tsubasa had to attend other duties, he quickly realized that was (as he expected, honestly) not the case. Though Barnard does tolerate being given basic exercise and being turned out and groomed by his rider's wife, he will get quite fussy if under saddle by anyone but Tsubasa; the Outpost's historically-busy owner has shifted his schedule accordingly to spend more time with Barnard. It's like having a child! A very big, four-legged child who attempts to stomp his hooves most disdainfully when you try to apply sunscreen to his belly and butt so he doesn't burn from the sun reflections on the snow.
Ah well, he's used to it, and it's nice to add someone new to the pack. The Outpost's couple of pack and driving horses enjoy having another horse around for company as well. Now that he's five years old and able to start entering most competitions, Tsubasa is eager to try him out in a show setting, and start making the rounds of some of the novice competitions for fun to really let the young star spread his wings.
